I quite fancy an A6 avant, but keep hearing not so good things about the 2.0 tdi. Having sat in Rab's car, they are nice inside and very spacious. Lots of cubby holes for your butt plugs etc.

As Andy, has said, I've got a 56 plate avant, 2.7tdi Quattro s-line. Had it for pretty much 2 years now and put on just over 46k on the clock (now at 138k) I'm not quite sure what you are looking for so i'll generalise a bit;

I wanted the Quattro which dictated the V6 engine, however i'f your happy with 2WD then the 2.0 tdi would be my choice. Now, I know there have been issues with injectors and EGR valves on these engines but i'm pretty sure they solved this on the later cars - not sure which year though.

if your looking for the avant, the rear washer pipes split at the hinge leading to failure of the radio amp, satnav units etc which are located in the rear left hand compartment of the boot. its worth checking this and ultimately getting it replaced if its not been done already as the units are expensive - trust me!

2.7tdi has timing chains so no belts to change; I cant recall the same for the 3.0tdi but it is known to have issues with intake flaps falling off. While in the subject of the larger engine cars, check the tax class as some of them fell into the 'lets pay off the national deficit with our road fund licence' class.

Trim wise, I prefer the s-line but I suppose it will come down to preference over the SE which might be a little more comfortable (but doesn't look so nice in my opinion). The LeMans spec cars are nice but they were just out of my budget at the time.

On the manual, you will have the usual risk of DMF failure.

Interior wise, leather wears well; mine has 138k on the clock now and although it needs a clean, its all still in one piece.

Sat nav if fitted is pretty good but only takes a part post code (well mine does anyway). The Bluetooth phone prep unit can be problematic - I had mine replaced earlier in the year at around £300.

Now, would I buy another; very likely, however the principle reason for buying the A6 was the rear legroom which was pants in my old A4. However the newer shape A4 which would be in the age band (I think its 08 on) has far more rear legroom and I'd consider that as an alternative (along with the 5 series if I don't want 4WD)

I had two previous A4's, the reason I didn't buy another Audi to be honest was the engines. Maybe the 2.7 is different but the 2.5 TDI V6 was disappointing, and the 2.0 TDi although quick enough has many scare stories about injectors, oil pump failure, etc.
Instead as you know I bought a 5 series, and all round its excellent, there is nothing I can really knock it on. The 6 cylinder engines are strong and in twin turbo form the amount of punch is excellent.

I should have added that I had both the A4 and the A6 remapped as well; both were originally rated at 180bhp and up to around 220bhp now. Performance wise, I preferred the A4 but i'm not sure if it was because it was a manual

I have to say I have an A3 2.0tdi, done over 130k and never had a problem with the engine, had it mapped and goes when you need it. Perhaps I was lucky with this.

So looking at 5 series BMW estates on Auto Trader site and 2005-6ish for around £6,500 with 80,000+ miles is about the going rate for what I can afford. I dont want any finance so just using what Ive saved up, I could put a bit more into it but dont really want to for a 7-8 year old car but they are very nice

I seriously doubt it!

I'd say go drive a selection mate, that's the best way to see what you like. Be careful with both the Audi and BMW with spec, lots of basic things can be optional so it really is down to the original purchaser at what toys you have got.

Agree with Tom, the cars don't generally come with the same standard level of toys you'd expect with some of the more mainstream stuff.

Got a 2.5 TDI V6 Allroad. Hate it. Lag is worse than the T3 in the Mini and is really thirsty. My wife loves it and that's why we've still got it!

I just upgraded my 2001 530d to a 2008 530d M sport last week... One word... Wow!!

Honestly, it's unreal, sat nav, full media package.. Everything! Straight six purrs and power on demand!

I will back up anything said about the 5 series, I'm sure my next one in a few years will be a Beemer too. Drove a few audi's, not for me.

Just my two pence worths....

Just don't buy a manual e60... It's got to be the worst clutch ever.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Somewhere around Swindon

vag have only just sorted the injector issues on the 2.0 so you would be looking at a march 2013 on car!

I think that's the nail in the coffin for audis for me. Mine has been pretty economical to run, but I can't afford to run the risk of huge unexpected repair bills.

There was a recall on all Siemens injector equipped 2.0 PD engined cars from 2006-2009 too.

If you google around you will see that a lot of people who have had the recall work done have had nothing but problems since. Injections not being sealed properly, timing issues, electrical issues, subsequent DPF failure on 170's etc etc.

Think if I was buying diesel in this age range it would have to be a BMW! My old mans 2007 325d is a cracking drive (apart from a heavy clutch but it doesn't bother me) and still delivers mid 40's around town!

I'm not overly impressed with the 2.0 140 CR engine in my A3 either! Thankfully I don't have to pay for it when it goes wrong!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

now well of the original topic, the 1.9 engine is the one to have apparently.

Paul, start looking at beemers now?

Yep apart from the 105bhp BXE which is prone to throwing rods!

My 1.9 pd tdi 130 hit 189k miles yesterday. Never breaks and delivered 54mpg average on my trip to work this morning (28 miles motorway and 10 round towns).
