Was wondering if there is some knowledge about VAG diesels..?

I have sold the Volvo and bought a (Dec) 2005 Golf 5 TDI (105hp).
It seems to be maintained well, full service history.
It runs very well, quite pleased with it but there are 2 things that annoy me:
1. When cold it starts directly, but when warm it needs quite a lot of revs from the starter motor to get it going.
2. When cold putting it in 3rd gear it crunches unless I am very careful but when warm no problems at all.

Is bad starting when hot a diesel thing (doesn't sound likely to me)?
Was hoping for some advice; for instance would it make sence to flush the gearbox (5speed)?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Standard VDub gear boxes

This happened to my mates and heard alot of horror stores with there gear boxes made of chalk and cheese

For the warm start issue it sounds like one of the engine sensors is not working well, possibly the coolant temp sensor. I would get a diagnostics box plugged in.

Thanks for your reactions...
Gearbox on its way out... hmm, that's not good...
Any chance I can prolongue it's life (how much time do I have left doc?)

Are 6 speeds better?
Would it be possible to fit a 6 speed when this box gives up completely?

Coolant temp sensor, could have thought about that myself... thanks anyway.

Cheers men

My mate had a 2006 and his DMF failed and took the gearbox with it.

Problem with vags post 2003
The pd engines are bullet proof the rest arent built to last, as if you keep your vag for 10 years plus you won't buy a new one!

Reading up on RTS Clutches

Pity your bollocks are in line with the flywheel!

Is anything built to last these days? Surely its pretty much throw away after 10 years with everything modern.

I believe the 5 and 6 speed boxes are interchangeable.

Unfortunately very true, it one of the continuing discussions at work lately.
You are 'forced' to put cheap sh!t in appliances to be able to compete with the market.
Problem is that applainces should remain safe untill people stop using it, also in extreme cases... some companies take shortcuts that create untollerable (sp?) risks, just to make mony.. unacceptable in my eyes! (and fortunately also to company I work for)

That makes things a bit interesting, I do quite a few motorway kms so would help economy.
But are these 6speed boxes any stronger?

Strong enough, but there was a known issue with the diff bolts from memory. Ours spat something right out the side of the gearbox casing but still worked fine. Poor mini got the blame for the leaking oil at first. New gearbox under warranty.

Thanks for that chaps!
Will keep a look on 6speeds for sale.
(found that a revised 5speed is only 400Euro's seems cheap to me, bit suspicious or)

Give the guys at Darkside developments in Yorkshire a call for advice and go faster parts they are really helpful.
