Cut some slots in an old bolt and use it as a thread cleaner?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

if the threads are fooked the tap you need is 5/8" uns s is for " special" a slight nats pitch difference to re instate the thread, available on ebay but pricey around £40 billys

without going in the shop the pitch I think its 18tpi but I may stand corrected ?

here's a link http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=5%2...ns+tap&_sacat=0

hope this helps *smiley*

The crank thread is 5/8"x16tpi whitworth form. NOT a unified form. Thinking it is a unified form is the first mistake.

This has been debated out to the death over on TMF. The BMC workshop manual clearly states 5/8"x16tpi whitworth form rather than the 5/8"x16 UNS that keeps cropping up.

Main difference is that whit is 55degree form vs 60degree for metric and UNF/UNC, and that it has a rounded crest and root. The lack of visible "roundage" is why the form is debated so much IMO. The difference between the 55 and 60 degree is pretty hard to measure short of using a shadowgraph. I don't know if anyone has actually used this piece of equipment to measure the thread, but until i hear proof, iI don't think we'll ever know for sure. It'd be a good idea to section a crank tail, and a bolt if anyone was really interested in doing this and proving the answer once and for all.

I bought a 5/8"x16 UNS tap from a hardware store in South Carolina years ago and have been using it successfully ever since.
Used it to reclaim a couple of utterly buggered cranks where a puller had been used without blanking plate and chewed up the threads (one was smooth) and both engines are working fine without losing the flywheel.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
