Pretty sure that's a 3.1 then!

2.9's were on the 10" ones.

Early (A series) 998's had 3.444 diffs, except some vans/pickups which had 3.76. The changes came with the A+ stuff, the early A+ engined cars from approx 1980-ish to 1984, fitted with 10" wheels had the 2.9:1 diff. The 12" wheeled cars from 1984 onwards had 3.105 diff ratio.
Metro turbos as most of you know were 3.21, as far as I know all the carb and SPI 90's Coopers were 3.105, until the TPI's came along in '97 with the 2.76 diff ratio.

Only thing to be aware of when changing to higher (lower number) diff ratios is that on some boxes the mainshaft bearing retainer may need its bore machining larger to accept the corresponding larger diameter diff pinion gear.

I have a feeling that a few 998 A+ engines came with the 3.444. I think, and I could be wrong, that the racing green and the flame red had the 3.44 in an attempt to make them a bit more sporty.
