On the topic of setting up knock detection on the ECU: I've taken the approach of gathering a lot of datalogs across the rev range with no knock (conservative ignition timing and confirmed by listening through headphones).

I've then used the histogram view in tuner studio to establish the max level with no knock at various RPMs and used that to set up my thresholds across the rev range.

I'm sure it's not bulletproof but I think it's useful enough to be worth setting up if your ECU supports it.

For listening I've been using a pair of moulded in-ear headphones with ear defenders over the top (copied from Northampton motorsports setup).
