just wondering, has anyone fitted a cosworth 4x4 intercooler in position just behind the front of the bonnet above the spark plugs without cutting bonnet holes? so like on an angle which catches the air flow? or is that an un-efficient place to put it?

not sure it'll fit and still get flow there dude. If you're planning it, best use a 2wd one as they're not as deep. The 4wd will be right up against the block so you won't get much flow through.

ahh ok! thats why i was wondering because this 4x4 one is huge! I wonder if a 2wd one will fit without bonnet holes and still get good flow.

i dont know what the flow is like that goes over the top of the engine?

Might be an idea to tilt the bonnet so its open a bit at the back so air can come in the grill and out the back of the bonnet over the screen ?

but unless you can get the cooler behined the grill or direct air at the cooler you will have to cut holes

If you want to stick with the sleeper look, i'd just go for a smalled cooler like a rst one. There was a nice one on here recently that had been fitted in the offside wing, would be keen to see how well that worked.

Or if you are feeling flush, you could put in a charge cooler.

Air will always take the easier path, unless forced otherwise! If there is no holes infront of your cooler it won't flow in that direction.

I had an R5 cooler fitted in the wing, seemed to work, not as efficient as a front mount, but wanted the sleeper look aswell.

If your running jolt and still got a side mount rad, there maybe enough room to fit a 2wd drive cooler behind the grill, next to the starter under the alternator?

Thats what I hope to do, with the MJ and a side mount rad you might be able to get it down low enough to almost be behind the grill. Maybe some ducting could be used to help. We need someone that has one fitted to clear this up.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i have a td5 version that will go behind the grill with some work a la jimster before the 16v head.

£45 posted *wink* would be the ultimate sleeper look and performs very very well.

I seen a Rover 200 turbo intercooler for sale on ebay the other day.

Core size looked very similar to a Cossie, but perhaps with slightly more favourable end tank shapes ??

Might be worth a look ?

I managed to get a Pace alloy intercooler from a Renauult 5 GT Turbo. It's not much bigger than the standard R5 Cooler but it has 2 cores and is much more efficient. I haven't attempted to fit it yet, but I can't see it being a problem.

It only cost me £60 but they are £250 new and usually sell for over £100 second hand.

You sure its different ??

When I researched it years ago, most of their intercoolers were same as standard, except with alloy end tanks.
I just dumped the plastic end tanks of new cores, and made up aluminum ones that I got welded on.

if i mount it behind the slam panel and raise the bonnet slightly at the back, would it work well? would the air flow through the grill and up through the intercooler (if i face it at about 45degrees) and then out through the bonnet/down back of engine?

I dont think it will work well unless it can see fresh air that is coming at it at speed. It needs a good flow of air to work.

Cooler looks sweet, bargin!

Try it there and duct air up from the grill in such a way that it has to go through the cooler .... if it doesn't work you'll have to relocate it but worth a try before getting the hole saws out ... has to be better than what your currently using ... *wink*

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Ducting would be the best bet...

And dont forget, the ducting opening, only needs to be something like 1/4 of the size of the frontal area of the core ( as per Corky Bell )

A lot of the core front, is solid metal that air cant pass thru anyway.

I thought about angling it down a bit at the front with a bit of sheet metal running between the bottom front endge of the IC down to the grill. Surely this will pick up as much air as a bunch of holes? Well it'll only work if you can get the IC back from the bonnet and not so much that it's tight to the engine. Hmmm. That's what I was planning with mine but I haven't dummied it up yet so might be a daft idea.

Holes might allow air in.....but they allow air in anywhere.

Duction directs all the air through the core.

Holes could let as much air around the core, as through it...in fact, more would probably go around it.

thats such a good idea! the ducting from the front grill. About a 1/2 of the area of the grill thats how much air ill duct to it from the front.

Sorry about bidding late on the cooler i wasnt snipe bidding, i saw it at a friends and had to rush home to bid and only just got in on time :( really sorry about that :( I put in a bid of £40 and expected to be outbid

thats alright mate. fair play to you theirs another on on net at mo so ill try grab that one. but let me no how u get on. the intercooler i fink is the bugger on mini due to not alot of space and to be fair the hoses for wat they are are a fair bit money. if you fit yours before mine it be off help if i new what pieces you used. i bought some silicone pipe from a place called viper performance . they advertise on ebay. they seemed resoniable price for pieces. nothing fancy like sfs or samco. but does job and looks good in blue.
