Turbo Mini Forums

Most of the work done on this was to sort out the arch holes, as they were all over the place from where different arches have been fitted, some of the holes were limiting where they could be placed as the un-used holes would show, so I decided to get them welded up.....







Decided to fit a Mk1 number plate light instead of the normal jobby!









This is as far as ive got with seven days to go...LOl...I can sense some real late nights.

Ive been told 3 litres should do it, what do you recon?

Im using 2 pack this time so it should be a MUCH better coat.

Normally get through about 5 litres inside and out on the main body colour with 2 pack. Usually another 1 litre goes onto the roof, arches and mirrors etc.

Is that using very little thinners Roger and how many coats?

The parts being sprayed are,

External surfaces (NOT roof)
Bonnet both sides
Door shuts
doors all over
NOT doing arches or rest of inside as its not needed!

Ric, probably going for similar style as before, but not sure where to but good quality ones from yet?

I normally use a 2:1 product line so for 5l of paint you use 2.5l of hardener making up 7.5l of paint ..... in theory. What happens in practice is that your last coat goes on with slightly thinner mix (i.e. add thinners) as that helps with the depth of 2pk which can look a little plasticy (like powder coat) if you throw the straight clear over a 2:1 mixed top coat.

I generally use a couple of coats everywhere then the thinned one on the outside visable panels only.

Always clear coat by the way, even if there is no "need" for the system your using. The reason I say this is clear tends to be more durable than a colour coat and makes the car easier to buff up in the long run as the paint won't be as effected by UV under a clear so will age as one.

I thought 2k paint mixed at a ratio of 2:1 being 2parts paint to one part hardner with upto 15% 2k thinners if needed.. OR am i doing it wrong? it always looks good when finished.

2:1 2 paint to 1 hardener...

The amount of thinners is open ... 15% max is fine for normal coats but upto 50% of the total mix can be thinners for a high flash-off coat which will have a really nice deep luster. Need to change your set-up to cope though as it's all too easy to create runs ......

Did a bit more work to it Saturday, managed to get the boot and rear quarter finished and flatted ready for paint!





After spraying the front wing in matt black and flatting it, a few high spots appeared, but an introduction to my panel hammer seemed to see them off pretty sharpish, will have a look at it agian tonight to check!




Respray is only 4 days away now so its gonna be a late one! Lol

i did last night, i wasnt that precise-i prob put in too much tbh, but im wondering if i could put less, or none in?

I'll put some more pics on tomorrow, hopefully it'll be completely finished tonight!

TBH im not getting involved in the paint mixing side if I can help it, im leaving it to the sprayer, he's been spraying for over 25 years and I daren't argue and risk upsetting him as he's doing on the cheap! Lol

I'll find out the mix when he does it if you want and post some pics of the result..(if it turns out ok, if I don't you'll know why. lol).

Ive come to the conlusion I had no feeling in my hands what so ever!

The panels I thought were straight, weren't!

A bit of thin lint free cloth helps loads to pick out any imperfections, seem to be getting somewhere with it now, thank god!

so what's the plan with it matt? Showing it? Mag feature? Or purely for your own enjoyment of knowing you have an immaculate mini turbo?

If you'd of asked me that a year or two ago I would of said mag feature, but not bothered about that now, im just getting to be a fussy bastard and the smallest things on it are starting to annoy me! Lol

And the bargain price was the final thing that swayed my decision to respray it!

Thinners in 2pk paint .....

Well you can use upto about 15% to get the viscosity you need to suit your gun.

Normally it is best not to if you don't have to however I usually thin the top coat a little as I belive it helps give a deeper luster ...
