next thread size up?

just a quickie, got a few shagged threads in the side of my gearbox for the transfer case fixings.
Whats the next metric size up for me to tap em to please? (only got a metric tap set)

Engines coming out over the easter weekend to sort a couple of annoying oil leaks but i know if i have to remove the transfer casing again it wont go back on, think it's only held on with 2 into the box inside now....

Think thats gonna be M10,

the ones you mean are 5/16 UNC the clearance hole for that is approx 8mm so you won't get an M8 thread in there.

I think M10 will be way too big and will possibly split the casing, then you really are buggered.

I'd try and get yourself a helicoil kit.

I doubt there'll be enough meat in the box to hold M10 bolts!

When i build my box up i think i might do them all to save grief later...

not that i normally strip threads though.

A Helicoiled thread in ally will be stronger than the original.
Bosch Helicoil some housings on the production line.

bugger, i was hoping you weren't going to say that.

a mates offered to helicoil em for me but he's in northampton and i'm skint. oh well i'll see how it goes at the weekend.

Local engineering supplies should sell helicoil kits. If not Minisport seem to do the perfect range.

Not that I wouuld recommend them, but if you need them they might just have them.

I wouldn't get them from minisport just for the fact they try to charge 90 odd quid for a crankshaft tap...

Ive got some 5/16 UNF (not ideal as they are a fine thread in ally).

The outer thread measures 9.5mm so im guessing they are 3/8 unf. You will have to drill the holes out to 8.2mm though.

Also got M8 helicoils, if you think there is enough metal to drill out to 8.6mm then tap?

As that casing is dowelled for alignment you might get away with helicoiling the holes down one size and using smaller bolts. The next size down coils will probably screw straight into what remaining thread you have then you only need buy the inserts rather than a full kit. Pluss you won't need to enlarge the holes in what is a narrow wall of casting.

Just a thought. The more edjucated engineers will probably give you excellent reasons why it a load of crap!

well i'm off up to morspeed tomorrow to get some new exhaust guides so i'll take my gearbox case with me and see if simons got some helicoils in stock.

just got to get the engine out the car tonight now...roll on 4pm when i can go home and get started.

Offers still there, if you still need them after the weekend Bud. Ive got the insert tool, and should have the tap somewhere for them aswell.

I bought a M4 helicoil kit for £24 recently, I recon you'll be looking at £30 for the kit, comes with the tap and tools, you just need the right size drill bit.

My old box was full of helicoils, did the trick, not used them in a while tho!

well the engines out now, looks like the half moon seal is ok so no need to take off the transfer case to split the engine/box. I'll sort em out next time its apart :)

got a big fuppin leak from the turbo oil feed, gear linkage, timing cover don't look too clever, speedo casing looks a bit ropey too. good job i've got plenty of gaskets in stock!

i fot got to give you that box of gaskets too... if yout missing any you know where i am

its ok dude, i've got all the leaks sorted now as far as i can tell. Engines back in the car now anyway, just gotta connect everything back up in the morning :)

also good in hot components that could seize.
