Been making my numberplate from a real carbon fibre sheet, sticky backed numberplate acrylic and letters cut out on a machine, but ive run into a problem...

Air bubbles!! did it through a proper numberplate mangle, but theres no way of getting the bubbles out.

Anyone got any suggestions? id preffer the carbon the bottom layer, then the numbers, then the acrylic. the only other way is to put the letters on last on top of the acrylic but it wouldnt look as good.

thanks for any ideas you lot have *happy*

Hi,
How thick are the letters?
The proper ones are extremely thin, I think that could be your problem.
Also the normal backing is vinyl so this would "mould" over the letters whereas the CF won't.
It looks good though!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

dont bother with the clear over the top. it adds weight you dont need.

what was wrong with the one in the first picture?

They just look nicer and more factory made with the clear on and a bit of depth to them. without it it just doesnt look right up against the car.

ive just been and got one from the garage, i see what you mean now. i think its also because the carbon doesnt take shape of the back of the letters too.

i wonder if i could get clear vinyl anywhere with the letters printed onto it silver

scalple pin holes in the bubbles and use the handle of the scalple to run the air out, once it is all gone, put a very tiny bleb of clear nail varnish over the pin prick to seal it and stop water getting back in *wink* piece of piss !

what would be best to do, is to keep it how it is but instead of having the clear plastic cover, i think* i can get a clear film that is used as a shatter resitant for windows.

I will phone them tomorrow and find out for you.

cool ok, is it thick? i quite like the thick perspex look but if its not possible no worries.

another thing ive been thinking of is, using non-sticky perspex and glueing to seal it around the edges, but it might not be as nice finish and might not protect from water getting in

Feebs Just my opinion but this seems like so much bullshit for carbon backed plates ? why not get the old style plastic letters that plug onto the back plate ? then it maintains its retronicity ?

thinking of making a couple up tomorow, with the lettering on top of the perspex. Fitted one to my car iwthout the 'depth' to it and it looks rubbish, looks like a sticker.
problem with letters on top of the perspex, is they wont be jetwash-proof or waterproof.

im trying my best to get thin vinyl letters

Sounds like you need to get a large quantity of numbers and letters made into a DXF and water-jet cut from 3/4mm thick plastic.

Your logo looks fine - but you might be best concentrating on the product first?
