did ok, but one of the questions was:

what material is magnetic, but non metallic...

??????

anyone smarter than me care to enlighten me?

Arn't you supposed to be able to float a pine needle on water to make a compass?

That must be a trick question, as I think there may be either more than one, or none exist.

It says what material, as in referring to one.

They do. It's so that machines can read the info on the cheque. Those machines that are in abns and stuff that you can pay money in to instead of speak to cashiers.

but those inks contain iron that is magnetic and metallic. it might be referring to rubber or rather latex (bring it on nic) which can be statically charged to induce allignment of the electrons causing a magnetic effect. thats all the a level physics i know. lol

Graphite? Well maybe that's just a conductor, I can't remember.

lol at mini13

mercury is metallic and non magnetic :p
not sure about silicon but it could indeed be the magical one since its a non metal - not sure about it being magnetic tho - il get an old cpu off my dads business and try to make it stick to steel objects

Are you sure obout mercury being non magnetic?
Any way an electron beam or radio wave is non metallic and is attracted by a magnet. Does that count ?

yeh but thats electromagnetism which must be induced through a magnetic material in the first place - so its a wave rather than a substance - unless you want to be really clever and start with wave partical duality

Lodestone??? or magnetite??

Fe3O4 though so it is metallic - contains iron

Magnetic, as i understand it is something which is attracted by a magnet ie an iron nail is magnetic.
If the question had been ( a material which is a magnet but not metallic) that would have been very different.
Stick a magnet in front of your tv screen and watch the distortion, there is no metal in that effect.

thats due to the electrons being fired throught the cathode ray tube (crt) or if it is the lcd type then they contain metallic compounds which allign with the magnetic field

elements can be magnetic if they have unpaired electrons - such as oxygen.

There are 16 or so items that qualify under the paramagnetisim definition so why Oxygen? If you do a Wiki on Mercury you will find it's magnetic too.
You still have not explained why the electron beam does not qualify.
Joey, Did you find the answer?

The electron beam is using a wave partical duality meaning that the electrons emitted are a wave upon impact with glass and then due to the refractive index of the material become particles again - but they are sub atomic and as such not a material but a substance - supposedly there is a scientific difference between the two but i never fully understood. ok so if you follow curies law it states that any material can be magnetic if it has free electrons so theoretically any compound that you make as long as it has free electrons will be paramagnetic. mercury is a metal and as such is not answering the question. I chose oxygen because out of that list it is the ONLY non-metal and i didnt want to start doing electron balancing equations to formulate an everyday compound when the simple answer is O2
