Its the valve/spring assembley holding it up ... loosen off all the rocker adjusting screws, then torque the head down making sure the pushrods are lined up on the rockers.

Then you can set the clearances

all my adjusters are wound right up into the rockers, it seems to me the valve & spring assembly is holding it up

its really bemusing me now, is it normal to spacer rockers, just to make my story str8

the head is only fitted over the studs,

same deal with the rockers,

all the adjesters are wound tight in to the rockers & thats how its sitting above loose

i'd say at a guess 1.5mm gap

are there specific rocker spacers that you get from mini specialists or can you use washers (washers does'nt sound good to me)

cheers all

you;re not running 1275 pushrods on a 998?

you will get some lift as there will be the odd pushrod on full lift - this will lift the assembly a tad - (rather than open a valve).

torque the head down and see what ye gets..

ok, i'll give that a lckle go *tongue*

the rods are the ones that came out of the same 998 A+ engine

i just a thought, would there be a differance in a-series push-rods to a+-series pusrods?

Hi mate

what is the problem? The gap under the rocker pedestal? I would think that will just nip up flush when you tighten the nuts up onto the pedestals.
Then tighten the adjuster screws.

thats judging by the second pic in above post. are all the rockers loose like that?

im pretty sure it ,WILL, be holding it up, when you tighten the rocker pedestal nuts the rockers will push the certain valves open. Some valves will be open and some will be shut (as you cam is in and doing its job.)

Stop fannying about and torque the head studs, this will pull the rockers down and open a valve or two slightly. Then go round and do your valve clearances, if you cannot get 12 thou valve clearance on each valve when doing it the normal way then you have a problem. However I am confident there will be nothing wrong.

I would take the rocker shaft out , as it take nearly 5 minutes at this stage to see if it isn't bendt , in case it wasn't hold down by pillar nuts when you removed your head.

tom i'm stressin cause it seems really tight on the rockers counting from the left number 3 & 5 in the 3rd pic above, & when tightened down they are solid, no room to adjust as i have my adjusters all the way in, i thought the rockers would sit down on their pedistals to the head nice & loose then torque it all up & do the clearanc's, the rest stay loose or loose-ish!

i stripped the motor myself fab-man & undone all the headnuts 1st, i have a spare set of good pressed steel rockers that i got when i bought my 295 head

Looks to me like the rockers are fouling the spring caps before touching the valve stem.

You may need to fettle the rockers a little.

i'll check that out this eve axel, too hot to be bothered at the moment *tongue*

i cant understand whuy i'm coming up with this prb either to be honest! if the head had had a good skim (which it has'nt) then the rocker gap would be too large would'nt it?

i dont want or feel i should have to force anything into position

could i have been given the wrong followers, i dont think there is a differance between the 998 & 1275 ones is there?

the push-rods should be ok as they are the 998a+ type

anything or anyone have a simular experiance let me know

If the rockers are not fouling the springs or top caps, then it is all in your imagination.

As you torque down the head and rocker shaft, the valves 3 and 5 will be opened by the cam - this is normal. Looks like 1 and 2 are on overlap and will also open a small amount.

You can only set the clearance on the closed valves. do 6 and 4 to start with, then turn the engine through 180 and do the next two and so on until you have done all 8.

i'll check to see if its fowling anywhere in an hour axel

is it normal to feel tension when tightening the headstuds up that go through the rocker posts/pedistals

Yep, the valve springs are resisting compression as you open the valves.

Like I said at the start, and Tom and Steve have also said..... torque the head down, the valves will begin to open and the rockers will clamp down.

You cant take up all of the cam lift by loosening the rocker adjusters, there will always be tension in the valve train somewhere when the head and rockers are torqued down.
