broke something again

i think i might have broken my gearbox a little, thought i'd see if this noise sounds familiar to anyone on here.

basically in neutral rolling down the road there's no noises, as soon as you put it in gear and lift the clutch there's a horrible metally clunking noise coming from the bottom of the engine bay somewhere, it's road speed related, one bang per revolution as far as i can tell.

I'd just had me suspension set up by mr yardy and was out on the lanes giving it a blast to see what it was like, flicked it onto high boost, hit the gas a bit too early round the last corner before the farm inside wheel span up carried on up the straight still in 2nd then knocked it into neutral to roll down the drive to the farm. dropped it into first cos it had slowed down too much to carry on rolling and then the noise started.

My first thought was a diff pin coming loose and hitting the casing but dave seems to think it's the layshaft, i'd thought it could be an inner cv aswell maybe? investigations will start tomorrow night but thought i'd let you lot place bets first.

its not a MINISPORT diff is it, you can kill these with an 850 engine

god no, its a minispares 4 pin diff, well the moss copy of it anyway witht he offset pins. the box and diff have been in there almost 3 years untouched so i've been expecting it tbh.

if its a standard box then i would say input gear or input gear on the layshaft

its a minispares clubman gearset in there.

Sounds just like mine did, although I couldn't drive mine after it went.

I've not had it apart yet, but when I drained the oil 5-6 teeth came out. Let's hope that it's a CV though!

our escort had similar sounding symptons, was a knackered diff bearing

Well it's very broken, definately gearbox death.

just dropped the oil and found this stuck to the sump plug.



will rip it out and strip it down tomorrow, thats going to be a dead laygear i guess?

box has been in there since dave built it nearly 3yrs ago, done probably close on 30k miles. Running 170 lb/ft on full boost (15psi) but only running 10psi 70% of the time.

got it out and stripped today, just gotta find my 1" 1/8 socket to carry on stripping the box down.

don't know the name of the gear but here you go.

is there any damage to the laygear??

maybe a cheap fix?
