As title I am looking out for a digital camera. Rather than research on the net where you can find wildly conflicting views on just about anything, I thought I'd ask the most reliable source of advice I know, you lot.
At present I use my phone to take pictures, and while at 3 megapixels its OK for ebay and odds and sods, it doesn't take great pictures from further away etc.

So what I'm after is a recommendation of a cheap but reasonable quality camera. I'm no photography buff so all the fancy fandango super duper lenses etc are of no use to me, I just want a point and shoot type affair that will give reasonable quality pictures.

Any recommendations? Or better still anyone got anything for sale as they have upgraded to the aforementioned fandango kit?

Cheers Lads.

What up looking to spend?

I bought a Sony DSC-T2 for the other half for Christmas and think its great. Very small and compact, good photos and has 4 Gb of memory so no need for seperate cards.
Cheapest at the time was Dixons at £180.

Canon Powershot every time - Buy it when you visit the states... The macro (close up shots) on canon powershot A-series are far superior to the competition (note the large lens diameter) - usefull for very close-up pics...

The warranty is the same 'no quibble' wherever you purchase it in the world for Canon - I believe other manufacturers aren't so friendly in this respect.

I've had three generations of Canon now - I've dropped them all onto hard surfaces several times over, even had a bottle of water leak over the current one. I've not seen such robustness from other makes to be honest.

btw - don't go daft on Megapixels. It's like the 'bling' factor of computer specs and easy to get carried away - you'll never use all 7MegaPixels capability all the time...
I usually set my pics to 2500x1900, or more often 2000x1500 (or whatever it is) resolution, and occasionally up it to max when i have something I know i'll want more detail on. This way it's quicker to download pics, quicker to view them in a universal card reader, and you get more pics on a card.

A720IS is what i'd go for:
6x optical zoom, 8megapixels, the best macro - and a great price!
Don't let any salesperson tell you digital zoom makes up for optical - that is BS. 6x optical means your digital zoom can be turned off full-stop.

Here is a pic i just took with my A560 (7.1Mp) point and shoot of a 3/8 K-nut against a rule.

This is just to show you what detail you'll get with a mere 7MegaPixels...

i too am a fan of the Canon, although the IXUS stuff. had a 400 and 700 and they were both very good.

defo get it from the other side of the pond tom, chargers are universal and will take all voltage inputs. i just got one for the missus on the last trip.

Another camera i'm liking at the minute that all my photos are taken with is casio exlim's. but thats purely because they're good for putting in the pocket compared to most.

here is my 4 megapixel ixus 400 not on full resolution, its a 4mega pixel btw:

Are you definately sure of the chargers iain? When i used to work in jessops we used to get several people coming in who had bought cameras from the US.

It was the ones with the lithium batteries.
The genuine uk chargers can cost loads and it can easily end up costing you more than buying in the uk

Your probably right iain, but thats the way it used to be

Canon, olympus, fuji, sony you wont go wrong

If it has AA batteries - there is no need for chargers anyways!

The chargers i have all say 100-250v 50-60hz on them. always worth checking of course *smiley* those are the lithium battery ones

the exilim one was fine. it was an ex-77, not a bad camera at all.

Cheers for all the info chaps. As some of you know I'm off over the pond in a few weeks, so I'll have to have a look at whats available and what I can afford. The Canon range do look good.
Good point about the charger, I'll look into it, I know our gert has a camera that came from the USA, the charger does work but makes a weird high pitched whistling noise?
Any recommendations of stores over in the USA so I can look on websites etc? What is the USA equivalent of Currys/Jessops etc?! Dave might know this?

BESTBUY, CIRCUIT CITY, WALMART, (oops - caps lock is on), sears, tesco - ok, the last one was a dud. :)

Bear in mind, the prices you'll see on-line are plus 6-7% sales tax.

BestBuy often has good sales on. They will also match the price of any other advertised price; so do your homework, then walk into a best-buy.

:)

Iain, yes we are flying into Newark airport too.

Nic, you are only jealous, you get a blow job recently?? Whats that, No? Unlucky *tongue*

Although Iain seems to think his dog is a person, so I dread to think what has been going on in his house. Bloody weird Lincolnshireites!

DSLR too fandango for me mate, I still struggle to take a picture of a car that isn't a front-3/4 view from my standing height....then I wonder why they all look the bloody same.....
