Remove 1lb from the weight of the reciprocating mass of the engine and its equivalent to______lbs of the weight of the car.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

It's on the Minispares website under the description of their steel flywheels.

"Special Tuning originally produced this flywheel and it was even fitted to Allegros by Leyland to stop clutch judder under warranty claims Effects of lightening rotating engine components: (0.5 x n2 x r2 + R2) / R2 n = total gear ratio (gear ratio x diff ratio) r = radius of gyration R = Radius of wheel/tyre This formula gives what accelerative weight the engine sees of the car per lb. Radius of gyration of a transverse engine's flywheel is approx. 3.75" So to determine "weight loss" for a flywheel weight of say 18 lb to 10 lb, the engine would see an overall weight loss of the car to accelerate in first gear of: 3.33 = 1st gear of 4 synchro 'S' box 3.44 = diff ratio (0.5 x (3.33 x 3.34)2 x 3.752 + 9.52) / 9.52 = (0.5 x 131.2 x 14.06 + 90.25) / 90.25 = 1012.59 / 90.25 = 11.22 lbs So for every 1 lb removed from the flywheel, the engine sees 11.22 lbs less to accelerate off of the total car. Therefore by lightening the flywheel by 8 lb, the engine sees a total reduction of the cars accelerative weight of 89.68 lb."

This also assumes all things are equal - ie traction of the wheels to the ground. Any wheel slip in first, and it all goes to pop.

TBH I thought it was a load of crap. But, Ive just taken 5 1/2lbs of the weight of my engine internals.
When I fired it up yesterday for the first time since the rebuild it sounded a bit livelier than it used to.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

It also depends WHERE you've removed the weight. The crankshaft doesn't help as much as the flywheel..

Paul - its all horlicks - raw power is what you need!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Hi,
If you take a look in the bible the formula is in there. It's all to do with gearing as mentioned above, but you won't be able to measure the difference on a steady state dyno....
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I have got to the point that I think I have too much torque spinning the wheels in every gear change, and could do with more power to gain top speed on the quarter.

leeds/wakefield.

Paul drag squares with speed, sao you are going to need a lot more power,[torque] to go fastger,

heres a tale, way back in the early eighties, the guiness world record for a passenger cxar was held by some yank tank, at 300 mph, top speed , not acceleration.
it was quoted as needing 300 hp to reach 200 mph, but to get to 300 mph needed a ten fold increase, so 3000 hp it took to reach 300 mph,

do you see where i'm coming from, lol.

Yes, but I aint gonna get any more power from an n/a 5 port hence no more top speed
