Ello,

When my engines in and i've replaced a few panels that i want to, i'll be getting the car sprayed.

I think i'll do all the prep work by rubbing it down to bare metal and sorting any blemishes under the surface as i've heard that the majority of the work is the prep.

Will it be cheaper to buy the paint etc seperate or get the sprayer to buy the necessary bits?

What sort of a rough price would I be looking at to get the exterior sprayed only, not the engine bay interior or boot, also got a seperate flipfront not sure if that will change anything pricewise. I'm looking for a ballpark figure with the cost of the paint included, which is likely to be a pearlescent tahiti blue!!

Hope you can help,

Cheers

Start saving now !! As always, you tend to get what you pay for,so, unless its being done by a mate as a favour, anything under £700/£800 could be less than satisfactory, unless you are very fortunate.Pre prep by you is OK,but most paint shops will want to improve on a DIY prep job -if they just go ahead on your prep it may not be as you hoped,so ask first.(Not meant to be insulting, but most DIY prep falls short of professional standards)

Thanks for the reply!! Thats about how much I thought it would be costing so not too suprising.

It's understandable that my prep wouldnt be top notch or up to standard but i guess any work i can do towards it will cut the costs!!

Ive just been quoted £1500. Paint and materials for a mini would be about £500 at the mo. Everything has gone up.

I paid about £300 for all my paint and materials to paint a bare shell. Got mates rates for prep and paint at £800 for the labour

depend how much you want to do it,but at the prices mentioned you could afford to buy a compressor and sprayoutfit and do this car and all your future cars yourself.I first did it a long time ago, made mistakes,,learned from them and have produced cars good enough to win prizes - you could too.
Snag - I still use cellulose which is no longer so easy to get in special colours.Water based is the way to go.

"hammered" hammerite finish would be interesting haha.

If I start a fund raiser will you guys pay for the cost of the cans, i'll get you to do a vote for the colour aswell. I'd be up for that haha.

It's virtually impossible to screw up painting matt black. Even I can spray matt black without screwing it up! If you were prepared to do the prep yourself then you can spray it yourself aswell

EDIT: Wasn't it Andy Garnder who Hammerited his car? It's in "show us yours"

Doesn't necessarily have to have to be a 'hammered' finish, I painted mine with hammerite.

I don't actually know why it's easier to spray. I've just never been able to cock it up. At a guess, I would say because it isn't as "wet" because of the lack of laquer. I've never made it run or go orange peely. I know nothing about paint though

andy that looks brilliant, I remember you showing a progress thread of your car as you sprayed it and could see it was alot of work.

Unfortunately my car is a driveway project so wouldn't be able to spend alot of time getting it right!

Hi,
There's posts somewhere about painting your car with a certain paint and a roller?
Sounds stupid but looked great!

Thanks, I didn't actually spray it though it was done with a roller lol. Like you say not a weekend job and you'd definitely want to be out of the elements this time of year.

If you're thinking of prepping it yourself though going on to paint it in the fashion I did wouldn't be 'much' more work. Certainly cost effective I think it cost me about 70 quid to do the whole job!

How perfect a finish do you want, The mate who sprayed my car only lives in Bournmouth and may possibly be able to sort something out for spraying if you want a cheap but good job - well as good as mine is.

That was the original thread, probably much more reliable than my memory. Twelve coats apparently!

Interesting I never thought of leaving it hammered. Would deff be different!
