Start saving now !! As always, you tend to get what you pay for,so, unless its being done by a mate as a favour, anything under £700/£800 could be less than satisfactory, unless you are very fortunate.Pre prep by you is OK,but most paint shops will want to improve on a DIY prep job -if they just go ahead on your prep it may not be as you hoped,so ask first.(Not meant to be insulting, but most DIY prep falls short of professional standards) |

Ive just been quoted £1500. Paint and materials for a mini would be about £500 at the mo. Everything has gone up. |

I paid about £300 for all my paint and materials to paint a bare shell. Got mates rates for prep and paint at £800 for the labour |

depend how much you want to do it,but at the prices mentioned you could afford to buy a compressor and sprayoutfit and do this car and all your future cars yourself.I first did it a long time ago, made mistakes,,learned from them and have produced cars good enough to win prizes - you could too.

It's virtually impossible to screw up painting matt black. Even I can spray matt black without screwing it up! If you were prepared to do the prep yourself then you can spray it yourself aswell EDIT: Wasn't it Andy Garnder who Hammerited his car? It's in "show us yours" Edited by GaryOS on 24th Sep, 2008. Doesn't necessarily have to have to be a 'hammered' finish, I painted mine with hammerite.

I don't actually know why it's easier to spray. I've just never been able to cock it up. At a guess, I would say because it isn't as "wet" because of the lack of laquer. I've never made it run or go orange peely. I know nothing about paint though On 12th Nov, 2009 Paul S said:

Thanks, I didn't actually spray it though it was done with a roller lol. Like you say not a weekend job and you'd definitely want to be out of the elements this time of year.

Unfortunately my car is a driveway project so wouldn't be able to spend alot of time getting it right! How perfect a finish do you want, The mate who sprayed my car only lives in Bournmouth and may possibly be able to sort something out for spraying if you want a cheap but good job - well as good as mine is.
