Hi guys.

Bit of advice needed really, picking a car up in the next few days, however its untaxed (has an MOT though).

My fully comp insurance covers me to drive any other car and the guy im buying it off insists that the car does not have to be taxed if you just bought it and you are driving it home, as long as your insured?? Apparently if I get pulled on the way home i'll just get a producer at my local station.

Is this correct? What are your views on this? I'm sure someone like Richie would know!

Cheers

No mate, it has to be taxed. The only time you can get away without tax is if you are on the way to an mot.

Is your insurance a standard policy? If it is then it only covers you for driving other peoples cars. Once you have bought the car, then it's yours, so the insurance won't be valid.

Hi,
What he said ^
It means you'll lose 2 weeks worth of tax if you tax it mid month :(

Your choices are to A) tax it, B) get it fetched on a trailer/truck C) borrow some trade plates off someone D) drive it home without tax illegally

Hmm id be tempted to try option D but not sure if id want to risk it to be honest.

What would I get? A fine and some points?

It's a bit of a pain as the guy has sorn it and is not insured so cant/doesnt want to tax it, I guess i'll just have to tax it at a post office when I go to pick it up.

Can I still take the logbook with his name on it, along with an MOT cert and my insurance details and get it taxed? Or do I have to wait till I get the logbook through with my name on it?

Ive got a valid tax disc on the mini which isnt on the road, i was tempted to stick that in the windscreen when I drive the car home so everything LOOKS legit, still abit iffy though but its not like i'm going to be tear arseing about attracting attention. Its a good 90 mile journey.

Maybe 10 years ago I'd have risked it, but with the new ANPR cameras and database, I'm not so sure. If it declared sorn, and you get spotted they will stop you straight away.

They will just think you are one of the thousands of wankers that drive around without paying for tax/insurance/mot.

I wouldn't put another tax disc in the screen either. the likleyhood is that you will be picked up by an ANPR camera whcih uses the database anyway. If you get caught with another disc in the screen i'm sure its considered fraud - perhaps someone could confirm?

It's only a fine and not points iirc, not that I advocate driving it.

The law's a bastard for those who care about following it. Shouldn't there be an easier option in these cases?

check your insurance, i suspect that you are only insured on another car if it is insured by someone else.

apart from that assuming that you have a vailid insurance and mot, just head to the nearest post office when you pick it up?

baring in mind that he does not have insurance, that will mean you wont have insurance under your current policy. Therefore if you get pulled, they will take the car straight from you

personally, i would buy it, leave a deposit, get tax and insurance sorted, then go and get it

Yep I think thats the plan now, I was just wondering if I could tax it with his part of the V5 in his name and the latest MOT cert, but using my insurance details (confirmed above), I guess its not a bad thing if someone else is taxing your car for you so I shouldnt see why the wouldnt let me!

I was just trying to think the cheapest way to get it back, as i'm a bit tight for cash as my pay wasnt as much as I thought! I would have given it a miss if i hadn't already given him a deposit, but its too good a deal to pass on anyway!

I'll be getting the insurance to cover me on the car for when I pick it up, so I can drive back and about in it with no worries.

The tax is £100 for 6 months, if I get pulled and its an £80 I dont feel its worth it really, If im prepared to get fined (which I would be if I was prepared to drive it back untaxed) then I should be able to tax it in the first place so I'll do that!!

you can use the bit you keep,

also you can do it without any form of v5, just fill in a v10 which the post office will have.

you really jst need the mot and insurance cert's

you wont be insured on it unless you tell your insurance, as has already been said you are insured to drive other peoples cars that have been lent to you, have you checked your policy to confirm as my fully comp insurance wont allow me to drive other peoples cars due to my job(twats lol). if you ring your insurance and tell them youve bought a new car and selling you old they will insure both for a certain amount of time either for free or for a small amount to give you time to sell. if tax is 100 quid and a fine is 80 quid id buy the tax personally as you could end up paying 180?

you need the insurance for the new car. theres no real way around it.

im quite lucky really i just use works trade plates.

how far have you got to drive it.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Yeah Carl i'm going to have the right insurance for it, i'e ive just sornd the mini and will be ringing up Churchill to cancel the mini insurance and put it on to the 200sx!

I planned to have the insurance for it one way or another when I picked up the car (was just unsure if I could drive it on my mini policy at the mo), was wondering if I could get away without taxing it for the time being but I will just go ahead and get it done so everything will be hunky dory so to speak.

I wouldnt dream of driving about without insurance, if something where to happen it'd be alot worse than just getting a fine and slap on the wrist for driving 90 odd miles (Kent back to Porsmouth) without any tax!!

And James, I dislike you so much I wouldnt accept the offer for trade plates from you anyway. :)

And waheeyyy I just sold my pushbike so I can go ahead and tax the badboy anyway!

you can get a "laid up" policy for your mini whilst you are not using it from the likes of hic etc. it was about 60 quid for a year last time i got one. just a thought.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Hi,
I got lucky and found a friend of a friend who borrowed me the car trailer from the college where he works *happy*
I then borrowed my brothers C220D to drag my new car back from Sheffield :)
Cheers,

Haha if our 1.2 clio had a tow bar i'd love to have a go towing a trailer let alone a trailer with a 200sx on it!!

Me and Ben trailored my current mini back from Aylesbury, it was only after we got it back we realised that the weight of the trailer was something like 3 times heavier than what he was legaly liscenced to tow.

VR6 made light work of that though! :)
