Hello all,

I may be mad, but this is the first time iv worked on the car, let alone a major rebuild! So am a COMPLETE novice. My appreciation goes to Mr Haynes!

This car has been modded over the years. Its an 1989 Mayfair, used to be 998cc but had an MG metro unit installed. Iv had it since I was 16. Am now 25.

Anyway you've all been very helpful, giving intuition when most needed! So thought id post some pictures of the progress as I go.

Before I laid a spanner on the engine! The very first step to removing engine.

Another picture of engine still in bay.

Finally managed to remove engine after much sweet blood and tears! I made this engine adapter to suit. I used both oil filter bolts, one alternator and the PRV. Stripped down ready to be sent to Mr John Ks workshop.

Picture of engine removed. What a sight for the first time!

Supporting subframe ready for removal...

Hey presto sub frame removed! (first time genuinely worried - its only half a car!)

Starting on interior - stripping out.

Iv taken loads of pictures, and put the various bits and bobs in named bags so im not (hopefully) completely stumped when I come to put it all back together again :)

Thats the progress so far... I work full time, so only get evenings and weekends. But all in the name of good fun! *happy*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Just think how many crappy kitchen units could have been recycled into those crappy kitchen units, lol. Is it like recycled paper, where the quality drops the more its recycled *laughing*

Yeah, I have bought something to fit my angle grinder, going to take the bulkhead, parcel shelf and boot area to bare metal, and paint with rustbuster epoxy mastic :)

Am also replacing the floor pans inside as they are worn...more expense!

Chris.

I could give you a figure, but your better off asking John from Specialist Components...

But its reasonable considering the amount of work involved :)

That engine looks pretty tasty. Is it a strip down to a bare shell job?

Yeah iv stripped it right down...took the headlining out etc (and leaving it out!)

I got it looking good on the outside, but it was SHOCKING mechanically, so want to sort that out :)

So im blasting it all in one go...but I only drive it during the summer when its not raining. Paranoid about rust :)

Hi Brett - I bought the cage ages ago, but I think I bought it from MiniSport. Their catalogue is pretty good if they still have it it will be pictured in there.

Hi Minimole23, yes im going to turbo it, hopefully around the 15psi mark. The crank was sourced from MED, its been reground, wedged, backdrilled, bladed, nitempered, x drilled.

Looking Good.

However your centre main bolts appear to be Grade 8.8 like mine were. Why the engine builders keep doing this I don't know.

I'm using ARP mains studs for the four bolt main. However, the set I ordered from APT have a UNC thread for the shorter outer studs but the block is tapped UNF, so I'm still trying to sort it out.

Essentially the lowest grade that can be called "High Tensile".

3 stripe = SAE grade 5 = (approx) ISO 8.8
6 stripe = SAE grade 8 = (approx) ISO 10.9

quoted from from this thread (cheers Rod S and
joeybaby83 )

edit: helps if i quote the right thing :)

No way, they are worse than the standard factory bolts.
