Argh one of them days...another broken part found!!

I started the day quite optimistic, and after a swift run up to Avon park with car running better than it ever has, I was hoping to put in some good times. I got to my 3rd run and it was apparent I have no boost again and a HORRIBLE rattling/fretting noise coming from somewhere!

After a quick inspection it sounded like it could be the clutch, so I took the wok off to find nothing wrong or loose on the clutch, but shite loads of oil everywhere. So it was a trip home on the tow truck for me and finally got home two and a half hours after leaving Avon park.

Eager to find out the problem I started stripping it down, to end up finding out when I fitted the springs on my clutch, I hadn't aligned the cut-out inline with the holes for the puller! I managed to get the spring plates off, to gain access get the puller on and managed to get the pulley stuck on the flywheel still in the car. I am now going to have to attack it with an angle grinder to get it off! Ive just got in from the garage after 3 hours of pissing around to have more work than I started with 3 hours ago!

The symptoms for the lack of boost also don't seem good at the moment as the same thing happend at MITP last year and that ended up being a blown turbo. All in all wish I hadn't got out of bed this morning! Oh and I have cronic sun burn too!

Chin up mate, all of the buggering about will be worth it when its runing right and your putting some good times in on the strip!

I just hope its nothing serious/expensive!

I managed a 14.7 -103 terminal(bogged on the line), another 14.7 - 101 terminal (spun on the line) and 14.6 - 100 terminal (with vertually no boost at this point). Just trying to get used to lauching and driving it.

Oh yeah and also found out im only getting 75% throttle, which was down to my plenum webbing stopping the butterfly in the throttle body from opening fully.

You'll get there buddy, what are your 60ft times like?

Hope the turbo isn't terminal, fingers crossed for a fucked wastegate or something easy

"HORRIBLE rattling/fretting",
didn't realized this yersterday, but this a known sound, that remember me a wrapped turbo!

uuurrggh - fair play for getting straight stuck in though - fingers crossed its a 13mm spanner dropped down the back rattling round and knocked a hose off!

Blimey, doesn't sound good, fingers crossed you can sort it without too much grief.

Well here's some pics of the clutch assy...it looks like the inner section has twisted from the outer?

Note the blue coloured swarf between the two parts...



All of the bolts have rotated, but the notches on them were definitely aligned when it was put together...

so is the whole centre on the piss (it looks like it in the 2nd pic) or have the bolts just come undone?

I'm sure have a spare inner and bolts if you need them.

And yet more evidence as to why rover decided not to take the, "more power!", route with the Metro Turbo.

I fear we are all dommed to have components surrender like this.

Which verto cover did you use? Mine is flat and the same thickness all the way across. Looks like that one is pressed from thinner material.

I dont like the look of the threaded part where it has been pressed to give a longer thread depth.

Those bolts have to be torqued up very tight. If you just aligned the original staking marks then they would not be tight enough.

I would find a better cover and start again.

I'm worried about the keyway, was the me main flywheel bolt still tight

Matty I had this problem with the clutch on my rev'e 998 remember the thread:

I Know the bolts on mine where FT and yet the came lose in exactly the same way and crazily My keyway looked exactly the same I taught the flywheel bolt had come loose but I had used the after market retaining bolt torque to 170FP and it took at least that to loosen it.

Paul S - The clutch cover is one from a turbo clutch and the bolts were't touched from the factory? I suppose it is possible that they were removed and replaced at some point in the past but there was no evidence that they had? Any idea on torque figure for these?

Jim - The bolt was still tight when I removed it, but I did oticed that when they flywheel came off it did't make they usual massive bang that it normally does. This could be down to the fretting near the top of the taper?

Paul H - When it goes back on im going to wang it up as tight as I can get it!

It looks as simple as the bolts backed out a little and some friction welding accrued. Would think you might need to mate the taper a bit better on the crank next time with some grinding past maybe?

How thick is the cover?

I've just measured three and they were 5mm, 6mm and 6.5mm. My RTS is made from a 6.5mm cover.

I reckon that you have suffered a bit of torsional vibration due to those bolts not being tight enough.

That has lead to the crank taper and key damage.

I cant find the torque figures but I do remember reading somewhere that those bolts should not be re-used.
