Right went out for a spin in the Mk1 today to the shops, on the way back I decided to give the pikey engine some abuse got it up to 7800rpm in 3rd and there was an unmerciful bang. There was also a huge jolt and now, every time I try to select a gear there is a grating noise and a huge amount of jolting from the engine. I can get 1st and 2nd 3rd is a non runner and I didn't try 4th. I taught the flywheel might have come loose but have looked in trough the inspection plate and all is fine there.

So lets start the guessing now, I will take it to bits on Saturday ?

My guess is a selector fork has broken and it’s trying to select two gears at once?

Right had another little look at it this evening and it still moves under its own steam with a little coaxing, every time I go from neutral to a gear there is a lot of grating. As it is about to select the gear an gear that is, there is a lot of jolting from the engine I don’t think I have done as good a job as Robert but It sounds pretty fudged.

I'll be over Saturday morning to do take the waterpump off the turbo motor. We can pull the gearbox off the turbo too and you can have it
