Hi all.

I've been having some real problems with my manufacturer at the moment as those of you trying to buy some will know.

Anyhow this has sprung me into action and i've found another supplier/fabricator who's got a motorsport background and his stuff looks nice.

As this guy has a brain and interest (something lacking for a few years at current suppliers it seems) i'm seriously thinking of a kit to take a more modern turbo.

What would you go for?? what car can it be sourced from??

What are the outside diameters of the turbine and compressor housing like in comparison to the T2? smaller?

Anyone got an old one i could borrow for a bit???

i managed to squeeze a T25 in from a saab 9000 cse, but needed to take a few mm off the block,if the flange was at more of an angle it would have gone in nice,

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

I think the GT17 will be a popular choice, but it is a tight fit with no bulkhead. Not even sure anyone has managed it.

As you may knowI have just fitted an IHI RHF4. This is a very similar turbo to the R5 T2 size wise and may be a more modern alternative. It seems more widely available too.

Hi Guys,

Ok so the GT17 sounds popular. What cars are these off??

The IHI that Will is using sounds good. what did you find it on?? Would folks go for it without a Garrett badge??

Is the diameter of the housings any larger than the T2.

D1K1M4Y, i may take you up on that. I've been offered a nice new one to use but i'm happier mocking up with old bits.

The correct GT17 is actually quite rare, fitted to the Saab 95 Aero, but only certain models. Search on here on how tight the GT17 is to fit though.

The IHI RHF4 is a very similar size to the T2 physically. Mine is off a digger.

Stick RHF4 in to the search here for info www.crturbos.co.uk

Thr RHF3 is a smaller unit that may have the same fitment, also the RHF5 or 55 see here for info on the compresors http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=306641

If they all have the same fitment it sould be a good range of options.

I know what you mean about the Garrett factor though.

I thought that the 1752 was fitted to most Saab 93 and 95s other than the aeros which have TD04s.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Sorry getting my aeros confused.

Was fitted to 95s and 93s, but not easy to know which. Also fitted to numerous diesels, but not sure if the spec is the same.

Thanks guys for the info.

Would be nice if we could settle on a unit thats fairly common. I worry about the Diesel units, if they are same material specs.

Wil, if that range was all the same fit it would be well handy. But the Garrett factor!!!! Folks are put off by a T2 being a bit old! lol

how about the GT 15 dont know if its any smaller than the 17, for a better fit, i think its got the same A/R's as the renualt 5 T2 but i have no idea what cars would have them on.

gt 12 and gt15 have the same triangular flange, but I'm not sure if all are the same, as some gt15 have a square flange. I'm thinking a gt12 on my mini compounded later to a gt15 or gt17.

Comparing new to old. It really is amazing how the modern wheels the size of a 10p, outperform the old T-series which look about 3x the size lol

compounding compressors of two different air flows wont work very well. two the same will in theory will double the pressure ratio of a single compressor. A compressor will 'lift' the pressure say, two bar for arguments sake, from inlet pressure. If the inlet pressure of the secondary compressor is 2 bar, that means the discharge will now be 4 bar. the primary compressor inlet pressure is zero (guage) and discharges at 2 bar into the inlet of the secondary compressor. air flow, pressure ratio, and compressor efficiency will still be the same on both compressors, but discharge at a higher pressure on the secondary compressor, Two compressors in parallel will double air flow, but will only be able to achieve half the overall pressure ratio of two compressors in series (compound)
