I just recently had an Avonbar 1380 Turbo installed. It runs extremely strong @ 8psi. I have noticed that while idling there is blueish smoke coming from the exhaust. There is no smoke at all while driving. Could this be a problem w/ the turbo exhaust seal or being that the engine isn't broken in yet. Only put around 350 miles on it.

if its only on idle id hazard a guess its teh valve guides/stem oil seals or the turbo.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

hope you are running this motor in correctley on Mineral oil for the first say 500 miles ? or so *happy*

and you have not filled the engine with some of that say 5/10 or what ever piss oil everone raves on about as this may be causing the problems on your new engine.
in my book with over 30 years experience the old A series runs best on at 20/50 or 15/40 some wear inbetween these grades and NOTHING less*wink*

i would hazard a guess that the turbo has done the eqivelent of three light years worth of miles?*frown*

i doubt much that Mr AVONBAR has sold you a duff unit

see how it goes and if it stilll smokes check the compression correctley!

if the problems still there and the C/R is ok

then its a safe bet its the TURBO*frown*

in my experience too much emphasis is given to worn valve guides, this is not the case for you!

Valve guides are rarley a problem.

only in less than 5% of cases and then only if they have got more wear than my Grannys jaw.*laughing**happy*

hope this helps

Problem is, that even if an engine is build by Avonbar it doesn't last forever.
If it was built in 92, thrashed for ten years, sat for three and starts to smoke a bit. This doesn't mean that the engine was badly built!!!!!

If someone has Avonbar to bore their block and everything else is found at the back of the shed. I can guarantee that it will be sold off as an Avonbar engine. The same goes for Swiftune and the likes.

More info than just "Avonbar engine" is needed!

vegard i was basing my answer on the AVONBAR engine been NEW refurbed etc and not which you stated...........................

If it was built in 92, thrashed for ten years, sat for three and starts to smoke...................... is this fact?? my friend?

i cant imagine a reasonable firm like this.............................. *wink*

say draging a unit out of the shed an firing if off to a punter ?
Without refurbing all the parts first.*surprised*

they would give a warranty surley!!!

if the work was carried out extreemley poor
they would have more warranty claims than LADA

so the assumption is BASED on the above!

not to say that its not a Bag of Shite ?
it could well be!

but i doubt it knowing Mr AVONBAR*wink*

he does say hes only done 350 miles since purchusing it, so he must of bought it recently, unless he did buy it in 1992 and only done 350miles since lol

probably seals on the turbo (ex side) does it stop when you hold revs at around 2000 rpm ?(centrefugal force then helps the seal to hold back the oil ) - that is of course iassuming its the all new engine and not the 10 year old one from the shed

Ben, I think Vegard meant that someone who WASNT avonbar had a block bored by avonbar - then built it up with 2nd hand / 2nd rate parts, and would still sell it as an avonbar engine.

The engine was bought as a complete unit except the turbo from Avonbar. The turbo was bought refurbished from another supplier. It only smokes while idling. Once the revs get up to 1500 or so the smokes stops.

well if its NEW and it sounds like it is the engine
do what stuart says

ie)

the smoke stops when the revs rise
i would take the turbo off and take it to the firm you got it off for a replacement

problem resolved

OH! and dont take no for an answer be adamant

you want a replacemrnt if its in warranty etc tell them the seals are U/S

and its been like this from day one!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

likely the turbo.

could be too thin an oil, or too high an oil pressure to the turbo though

goto love the searching :) been on forums for years boring seeing every new commer asking the same questions :)

the turbo is like 300 miles old so i hope its not, but the oil return pipe seems to kink to one side prety bad, i wonder if its stoping the oil to return free enough causing high pressure in the turbo?

Hi,
Restriction in the oil return will cause it to smoke like a train.
Common fault on Fiesta turbos for some reason.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

ahh all fixed up the oil cloud out the exhaust WAS the kinked oil return pipe VERY VERY hard to replace with the engine in the car lol

i knew the turbo unit was 'brand new' cause it was shiny :)
(and had the recipt for it when i bought the engine)

any one now wanna guess the problem with the next one? lol
the cloud comes out the breather still, its getting better though is it due to it not been run in full yet?
i personaly put it down to blow by because when its reved lightly the smoke stops and when u lift of the smoke is slightly worse any one have alternative thinking?

Hi,
I think you'll get more "breathing" on a turbo motor because of the turbo oil return spraying a lot more oil into the crankcase.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

and you'll get a fair bit whilst its running in, dont worry for the minute.

Just make sure those breathers are nice and clear, plus vent them to a catch tank otherwise all that shiney stuff will be all oily and minging! *smiley*
