Has anyone compared these? Inertia vs pre-engaged vs others?

2.55kg for this type (including solenoid).
Saves heaps of room too over the Lucas inertia unit

One person says 3.8kg, another says 2.55kg. That is quite a difference, or is that not a standard pre-engaged unit?

I don't see how the pre-engaged saves room - that solenoid sticks out a long way???

I have a rover/honda 'hi-torque' starter for inertia ring gear converted by Eric (Wil H's chum). It weighs 3.9kg.

You don't need high torque for a turbo engine, high speed would be better,

I cant see the need for hi torque at all, my pre engaged is fine with 12.5:1 compression, although I did have trouble when I cut one up to lighten it, lol

I seriously doubt it!

I know that. I got it because it's nice and compact against the block.

Have you got a photo Andy? Keen to see how much space it saves.

I gather there isnt much weight you can shave off a starter motor though, as most of the weight is in the magnets?

It is not just the weight saving of the starter. The benifit of the high torque is they use about half the current. You can save weight on the cabling too. Plus it is much better for battery life.

If you push start, you don't need a starter at all *wink* .. save 3.5 kg's. that is a whole lot of holes. Downside is that it costs a few beers for each start though.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

That's one of the reasons I got it, it goes well with my diet battery. *smiley*

Aha!
Do tell...

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the hi-torque ones have a terminal in the front, so assuming plenty of clearance for this against an alloy intercooler, how much "front" room do you guys really think is being saved over an old inertia unit?

Does anybody know which is the lightest pre engaged starter?

Need some more room up front and would like the lightest i can get.

Cheapest is the minisport one but wouldn't mind spending more for extra weight loss.

Australia, brisbane

all the "hi tourqe" ones are is a small started with a gearbox to lower the rpm

if you gear it down then you make it easyer to turn over think of it like fist gear vs 4th from a standing start..

the current draw is saved because of this the starter is under less load beacuse of te gearbox it has

my self im running the std starter on my new turbo enginge its got by matamatics 12 to 1 due to flat tops that are flush on the block so its only the gasket and std 202 chamber volume left starter has no truble but it kills the battery all be it half fucked battery anyways not putting the good one in yet just carry it fr an emergency jump lol
