How do Gents. I am aware that the brise alternators are a nipon unit often found on a micra. What I am wondering is, what car is a (verto clutch) hi-torque starter motor from or is it a bespoke unit? My starter is goosed and I am toying with the idea of a hi-torque version, but wondered if I can bypass the hi-torque cost...?

My mate will do you one for £80 (iirc). But they are for 107 teeth rings gears and most vertos are 126.

Yes, pre vertos have 107 teeth.

I have the prototype at the moment, but not used it. He's sold loads for Imps though.

Excuse my ignorance but why would you need a high torque starter on a Turbo Mini?

As I understand it, and I'm happy to be proved wrong, you typically need a higher torque starter with higher compression engines and the increased compression makes them harder to turn over, however turbo engine have lower compression so the engine should be easier to turn over (if you have forged pistons then there will be a greater piston bore clearance so it should be even easier to turn over) or at least thats how I understand it.

You are taking the high torque too literlay. The high torque starters are smaller lighter and use a significant amount less current to turn the engine over. They also do spin the engine over slightly quicker.

Basically they stop you battery getting knackered/going flat. Make it easier to start the enging as the battery voltage is more stable under starting and hence the spark is probably better. And as a bonus are lighter.

I can't think why you wouldn't wont one.

I'll try and get some photos later. As I say I've not fitted it yet.

And no, it sticks out less to the front.

Some photos. You can see that a stud has been put in so it can be bolted up from the other side, this stud will fit straight through the existing threaded hole.

I could be mounted either way up, but I'm planning on having the contact at the front.

They are OEM starters with the ends machined to fit the mini.

They are basically of Japanese cars (I don't know the details). They are then machined and a new adapter plate added to fit the Mini, although in theory they can be made to fit most cars.
