Even the most powerful cars on here don't damage ordinary straight cut gears, so not sure really who they are aimed at.

Minispares ones are the best value.

Correct, but its nice to see newer developments. Still been work on..

I would spend your money on a minispares clubman set, and just run the helical drops, they will survive and its been well proven with power outputs over 190 HP and over 5000 miles, the SC gearset can't climb over themselves, with the torque output from the engine tranfering to the drop gears and to the SC gears in the box.

Plus they are very quite, you dott get screaming like the SC drops

Simon, I'm watching your gearbox as may well be interested at the right price. Perhaps give the drop gears a miss though after Benross' comments above.

lol 120,

I must admit, my helical drops have been surviving, have got them nicely set up, even splashed out and bought a new backing ring and c washer, although ended up using the old one but turned around the other way to tighten things up to 0.006 end float on the primary.

Whats the verdict on standard crown wheels and pinions vs high outputs ??

Anyway first time I have had the bigend of the Laygear / input gear fail, with out a bearing failure, although not sure how tight the bearing should be in the casing at the input end? I can put it in and out by hand with a little wobbling ? Should this be snugger, or is this why there is a big circlip?

Not sure if there might have been some coolant in the bottom of the box to that the big laygear may have been churning up. Also broke the rule of not giving it stick in 1st and 2nd a couple of days earlier.

Also noticed MED do a 25 quid Single roller 1st motion, as aposed to MS's 13 quidder ? Said to be higher quality, worth the extra ?

They also do their own clubman set, I think with different ratio's from minispares, which always seems to be out of stock

Hey don't get me wrong Steve I do really value your knowledge and opinion, its just there a few other bits and bobs I was thinking of ordering from them, and its practically the same price, will have to compair shipping costs.

Will probably stick with the helical drops though.

Thought appriciated, :)

Interesting point,

I guess we first need to understand what makes helical quiet and sc's noisy ??

i think the helical ones are quieter due to the larger contact area.

No, I think it's because the two faces of a helical gear mesh progressively, whereas in straight cut gears the two flat faces slap against each other.

That being the case, the noise would be unabated with the wider gears. Perhaps just a different pitch.

Agreed and there is also more that 1 or 2 teeth in contact at one time due to the helix

I just run normal size drops in mine so that gives you an idea what the normal ones take.

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

Hi Matt,

Which ones do you run, the minispares ones with the timken ? Must admit was wondering how much boost you run with the t3?

Anyway I was thinking that if they don't need to be wider then surely they just add friction?

Might be a different story for high reving (circuit racer) motors though, with respect to longevity/reliability interms of heat soak and or maybe shock loading?

I do wonder though is this the kind of thing you could just fit and forget about, period ?

Perhaps you should offer to trial test a set for them :) ? (as arguably one of, if not the top a-series power/torque producers??), and then hit the rr and see if there is any noticable power loss at the wheels ?

Ultimately I guess the laws of physics would dictate, and then it simply becomes a case of risk verses reward? Depending on application of course, as I seem to recollect you took a tooth off a quaife gear set one time. The light that shines twice as brightly and all that. At what point do you need to renew the standard width? Would certainly give added peice of mind.
Just a thought

Cheers

I like that they have thought out side the box to bring improvements but imo the normal sized ones are good enough for now proven by the fact alot of users on here at or above 200nanas have not seen failures that i known of
But i think it will become one of those for peice of mind arguments i know i have bought stuff 'to be on the safe side' or for that 'peice of mind'

The good thing with this new setup is that it makes the casing survive if anything goes wrong with the idler.

I use the Minispares equivilent if these in my race car. I'm led to believe that they are infact the same.

So spoke with MED today regarding a complete new box for the Frog, given that they are a recommended supplier on Slark Race Engineering's website and I hold them in high regard. I said having mashed the laygear in my standard SPi box, I was looking to upgrade to straight cut as a minimum, plus whatever else they recommended. Was surprised to hear Steve at MED say that in his opinion the drop gears are the weak point (I'm also running standard drops at the moment) and that the new roller bearing wider variant was brought in to deal with an Achilles heel even for the straight cut variant. He was surprised that my box has failed in the manner it has.

Based on this advice, I'm currently intending to plump for one of their Clubman s/c close ratio boxes, these uprated roller bearing drops, and cross pin diff, (£1300 exchange / delivered) unless anyone has any wildly contrary advice? He did try and flog me an LSD as well, but budget wont stretch that far...

I use the older med roller bearing drops. They haven't caused any problems and I'm not over worried that they will break either. I did change the bearing when I rebuilt the box last year.

They aren't showing any wear after about three years of abuse!
