I have seen an item bofore at a mini show to boost octane levels of unleaded fuel. I have been searchin on the internet for this product but cant find no information on it. It is a cigar tube shape and the fuel line is cut and this item jubiliee clipped in placed, in side the tube it was filled what looked to be lead balls. Does any one have any information on this product or if any body is using one.

As far as I know it is a load of bollocks and they don't work. If you want octane boost get some proppeer stuff like millers CVL or VSP.

I have always wanted to know for sure that it is bollocks. So if you say you have tested them, Alex, and they are a swindle thats good enough for me. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

They did a BSFC test at Manchester Uni using one of these 'magnet on the fuel line' POS's when i was there - similar result!

I have heard (but never tested) MOTH BALLS dropped in the fuel tank. Apparently they dissolve slowly and contain a chemical with high octane levels... Someone at the bodyshop apparently throws them in his Clio and performance has improved... I donated, but somehow didn't get the label! :( |

I'm really missing my Mini 850.... I would have tried the moth balls in it! Well, one thing is sure, you won't have any moths in your garage! I donated, but somehow didn't get the label! :( |

The moth balls sounds like an old wifes tale to me. I can barley, if at all, notice the difference between 95 and 98 ron I doubt adding a couple of moth balls would make a noticible change.

unless you advance the timing to take advantage of the higher octane then you won't feel anything!

The cars I refer to when trying different octanes is a saab 900 turbo and a nissan 200sx. Both turbo cars with knock sensors. It just didn't make a noticible difference. On the dragstrip with back to back tests you might see something, but to tell on the road is difficult. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

it could be both cars are designed to operate on 95 RON... in which case anything more than that goes un-noticed...

It could well be Alex, but they were not. The Saab was a 1984 and so designed for 4 star and the nissan was recomended 98. The mind is a wonderful thing and open to suggestion. If you are told it will be faster asfter fitting this or tweeking that, or in this case adding octane boost or higher octane fuel then you keep trying to prove it to yourself that it is faster. It may well be a small amount faster but the human body is pretty poor at sensing small changes in G and then remembering it half an hour later. Like Tom says it probably helps a little, but the protection against detonation is the main thing.

My old Legacy Turbo was supposed to run on 98. but I always used 95. I tried 98 once and it was noticable slower. I tried a second time with the same result.

That iterative map thing would make sense, I used to run my Legacy on 98 RON (Super) most of the time, but if I put some 95 in because I couldn't get super it used to pink like fcuk.

Did some research on the moth balls. Time for some Chemistry revision... the main component is Naphtalene, which is composed of two coupled benzene rings... now benzene is a poisonous thing which was removed from petrol when they lowered the octane. The moth balls dissolve slowly into the petrol, releasing this benzene compound with the fuel, which therefore then raises the octane level. So maybe this thing could actually work! Just dont do it anytime close to an emissions test! I donated, but somehow didn't get the label! :( |

barkiboi right the milers and other led addatives they sell in the car spares outlets & supermarkets at best only add another 2 points of RON or so the fuel, they also give protection to the valve seats guids etc, & thats it!
