Hi There, I'm planning to fit a oil filter before the pump on my new engine. I'm doing this for two reasons, to give me more space up front, and as I'm running a dog box this year there will be more bits of shit flying around.

Has anyone done this on an A+ engine??

this sounds a good idea. i've already fitted a pre turbo filter to try and save that.

i want to keep this engine as reliable as possible to get me through a seasons racing next year!

My reasoning is exactly the same as jims, need more space up front and running a dog box.

I did this once on an autograss engine.

The way I did it was to block off the oil transfer hole from the block to the gearbox. Then remove the plate at the back of the gearbox where the oil pick up bolts go through, and tap this to accept a nipple. That then went off to a remote filter. Then on the block side a bit more tricky, where the oil way runs (you can see where it is cast) you need to machine a spot face and then tap into the block to again accept a nipple. This is the return from your pre-pump filter.
Priming the oil pump before starting the engine for the first time was a bastard, but got there in the end.

I am sure there are other ways, but for me the points used are the most obvious ones to choose. The gearbox side is pretty easy to do, the hard work is already done for you! It is just the block which is a bit more tricky but by no means impossible.

Hi,
Has anyone tried this / any good?

I would think it should work quite well as the oil has to flow through the mesh and past the magnet.....
Then mount a proper remote oil filter in the cooler pipework
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I thought about one of those filters that Minispares sells, but my biggest concern is that due to the size and nature of the filter (it has a magnet) it will need cleaning / replacing regularly, not an issue for all out track cars where the engine is out on a regular basis, but could be a real pain on road cars especially daily drivers.

Well, I'm not bothering with a Pre-pump filter. Once again, the magnets in my sump will be going back in.
My Avonbar oil pump looked like new this stripdown - Waaaaaaay better than any Minispares pump I've ever taken out.

I'm doing something different for the oil feed this year however. Aswell as blocking off the by-pass in the filter head, I've had a piece of 1/4" aluminum (can't find aluminium over here) ontop of the filter head. I'm going to drill and tap 1/8NPT and take my turbo oil feed from here directly.

If I do the K1100 head, there is plenty of space to run another tapping for the cam lube aswell.

Hi,
I thought about that a while ago, when I was astounded to find the turbo oil feed was before the filter! *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I cant picture it atm, but i thought the turbo oil feed which comes from where you can take a pressure gauge feed from taps into the main gallery running the length of the engine? -which is AFTER the filter..?
