Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

That is smart. Are you running mapped boost - it seems to not have the huge slug of very low-down torque that the smaller turbos have?

i think just about all the spec ,including piccys of my head port design , is in this thread rog, oh except that its a plus 40 overbore ,dont know if i put that in anywhere ,dave , no no mapped boost , but i did have a bleed on the wastegate pipe that was flowing a serious bit of air so that would be delaying boost curve a little bit ,ill put on a ball and spring one when i can ..
if it works at the higher boost as well , i may start flogging the cam design , so ill keep that to myself hopefully without causing offence *smiley* .it does need to work with the port design though.
thanks for all the positive feedback .
regards robert.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, just taken the best part of half and hour to read it all & sadly it didn't answer my questions, although it did further my education in the ways of the GT17.

I started making an adaptor plate this afternoon to fit my GT17 to my spare metty turbo manifold (as I've had enough with bodywork) and I have run into a slight (but not insurmountable) problem; basically the manifold has studs the the T3 normally bolts onto & the GT17 also studs to bolt it to the Saab manifold. My initial thoughts where to remove all the studs, weld the adaptor plate onto the manifold, drill & tap a new set of holes in the adaptor plate for some studding, then drill out the the threads on the turbo and bolt it on to the manifold. However on close inspection of the turbo it appears that this isn't possible due to the way the casting is around the bottom right stud (the other three stud holes could easily be drilled out) so I thought about leaving the studs on the turbo and bolting the manifold to the turbo if that makes sense, but it would appear that this is not possible due to the way the casting is around the lower studs on the manifold. I'm now toying over grinding away part of the casting on the turbine housing to get the clearance for a nut, but I'm not holding my breath.

Also did you have to clock the turbo?

Rob H, we'll have to sit down with this and have a look but from the quick look at it I've had (how do you get hold of a GT1752????? ... breakers don't have them, UK Ebay doesn't have them noboy has them!!!) it's not a dissimilar problem to fitting a T2 to the Mety manifold.

I'm sure we'll sort this out mate;

1 turbo,
1 manifold,
lots of tea

no problem

I did the same as Robert (unsuprisingly, as he told me what he did). Basically, I got a tungston carbide bit on my dremell and removed enought metal to allow a nut to fit.

There are always some GT1752s on ebay.

Look for those listed for Saab 93 and 95s.

I bought one needing a rebuild for £25 and a rebuild kit for £46 last week.

Here's a new one:

The magic numbers to look for are:
Garret 452204
Saab 5955703

Looks T2ish, will probably fit with an adaptor plate.

More questions for Robert / Will

Did you grind out the inlet on the turbine housing from round to relatively rectangular like the T2?

Also what gasket did you use? if any?

I used an adapter plate (like the T2 one) but with a round hole in it. I then shaped this for a smooth transission from the square shape of the manifold to the circular shape of the turbo.

I think Robert just bolted his on?

I used no gaskets, all surfaces were flat so just used some assembly paste.

You need to search on the following:

Garrett
Garett
Garet
Garret
Turbocharger
Turbo Charger

You'll find one in a few days and then you'll get outbid by me!

OK, I'm thinking about getting at grinding stones out and opening it up so that it's more like the T2 (might use the T2 gasket as a template) the more I look at it the more I think it's the way to got, if I screw it up I can always weld some metal back in (I hope). Hopefully it'll help the flow of gasses from the manifold into the torque blower.

Rob I think it'll be fine as long as you finish tapering it in before the wastegate hole.

Also if you do F it up I have a Gt17 in bits thats scrap, (compressor wheel has been touching the case...) so I have a spare ex housing, although it is cracked...

Ok, did a bit more work before breakfast using this thread as a guide:

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=9465

and I was wandering what peoples view were on cutting back the port separators (not sure what the correct name is) in the manifold as I was under the impression that turbos preferred discreet pulses of exhaust gas, or have the likes of Nic & Iain proved that this is irrelevant for what we're doing.
