a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

i know a place that does mint elbow mods, head mods, and manifold mods *wink* if the rr guy cannot deduct what is casuing the lag i would be hesitent in taking it back to him.

to stick my oar in as usual, i would warn you not to push for big bannanas (bhp) if you are running standard drop gears, diff and gearbox. the gearbox is only rated reliable to 90bhp then failures are on the cards. this would be agravated by the use of big 13" wheels, so take it canny when pulling away at junctions *wink*

beautiful car though, and you should be proud of it !

Afraid I cannot find any pictures of Turbo. I Will keep looking. Below is the best I can do for a picture of the intercooler. Don't laugh at pipe work, it was only a mock up from the remains of a swimming pool ladder to make sure of the routing we were using.

If you put your foot down gently, you get a very stead but solid acceleration. If you put your foot to the floor, the engine starts off pulling nicely then starts stuttering (at this point the boost gauge is just going to positive, maybe 0.2bar) until the point where you need to change down. I need to drive it a bit more to be exact with what happens when.
The car is actually my Dad's and he spent all the cash, hence he makes all the decisions. He is happy with the power and does not want to make it any higher. On the other hand I have now got the bug and we are starting mine on our return from the IJ. below is the first mini I had 13yrs ago(1275 GT with cooper 's' head). Think I am going to go for the same, but with a turbo engine. I still have the head, is it any good for a Turbo engine?

That sounds like fuelling and nothing more... Did the RR guy actually take out the needle - or just adjust the mixture screw?
Is there plenty of oil in the dashpot?

A wideband Lambda /O2 gauge like this should be considered as essential (or more so) as a boost gauge... It'll identify fuelling problems - and the weak dollar is definatly in your favour right now.

oh - and the intercooler piping looks fine. A lot better than some real abortions I've seen over the years. *laughing*

Wish we had the buget for the lamda sensor. unfortunately money has run out. I think I saw a post on here for installing a Lamba sensor on the cheap. As I don't know the difference between Narrow band and wide band lamda sensors I'm wondering whether the effort installing it on the cheap, ie second hand from a ford I think I read(?) will do the job. The people that did the rr are fairly reputable I think so I would guess they did things properly.
I am sure that there is oil in the dash pot. Been down that road with NA engines. I will try the 2 dash pot springs tomorrow. cheers

8mm feed and I think a rather large 12mm return.

That's not GT, that's a Clubman! (holepicker)

I had approximatly the same happen to my car. It was a faulty coil in mine.

Can I use any spring in the dashpot as a secondary, ie from an 1 1/2" SU just as a trial (not sure on sizes). I guess if this is the cause I can get an uprated one from Avonbar. If this does not help I will try the coil, just to eliminate it. Am I right in saying that the coils off an NA 'A' series are not the same?

Vergard - you are right. The picture was taken before we put in the running gear and engine in from a written off GT.

so long as its a 12v coil and not one designed to run on 9v ballasted ignition system it should be fine.*smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Think about how much time effort and fuel you might put through the car testing, trying to sort things like fuelling.

A wideband might seem expensive, but really it will be one of the best purchases you ever make if you are actually tuning the car.

You could get a wideband here in the UK and sort a display for less than £160/170

Simple voltmeter displays can be found on ebay for around £15 and an LC-1 controller from Bill Shurvington wont cost the earth.

Though the AEM Kit dave linked, also looks damn good value.

The wideband lamda is now even further out of reach now. I think that the rr people were right when they said that the tubo maybe tired.
We lost oil pressure again, which was due the tiniest piece of metal stuck on the oil pressure releif valve. Cleaned the seat and ball and replace. drain the oil and replaced the filter. On restart we noticed a fast clicking which turned out to be a faulty King lead. We replaced that and lost some of the stuttering we have been experiencing. Next step we put a second spring in the dash pot which got rid of 90% of the stuttering. Then the thick blue smoke appear from the exhaust. There has always been a small amount of oil smoke, but we put that down to running in or valve stem oil seals. The exhaust has a fair covering of oil, but I checked the inlet track and that has a substantial coating. Ordered a Turbo from turbo technics and an actuator and dashpot spring from avonbar. With 2 weeks to the day left to the IJ I'm not even sure we will be leaving for Italy, let alone getting around and back.
Dave Here's the picture of the Turbo, not that it is relivent now.
