Slightly off topic but relevant and apologies if it's all common knowledge but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Lowering the suspension by a significant amount can present one or two problems, (as follows)
FRONT
1) Driveshafts operate at an angle causing power loss and wear. Fix is to tilt engine forward or raise engine to bring back to horizontal
2)Different makes of dampers have different closed and open lengths. This can cause damage to dampers unless careful attention is given to accurate positioning of top damper mount. Just buying a lowered top mount may not be good enough!
3)Exessive lowering can possibly cause overstressing of balljoints by exceeding their available angular travel.
4)Suspension geometry is altered significantly. Fix is to re-position the bottom and top arm pivots in the sub frame.
REAR
1) Clearance to wheel arch should be altered by "tubbing"
2)Depending on the brand of shocker used and it's open length it is possible for the knuckle joint to drop out of the cup in the trailing arm when cornering quickly. Jack the car up to test if it can drop out you should fit some form of check strap to prevent this happening.
3) It is a wise move to shift the brake pipe from the top of the trailing arm and position it to the side and fix with tie wraps.
No doubt I have missed plenty but hope this helps a little
Regards
Dave

So had a thought about mine....I measured it with my trusty plastic ruler but didn't compensate for the 3/4mm before the numbers start.

Its probably more like
Front 184mm Rear 199mm

It looks lower than "normal" here for some reason!

the miglia's will run as low as possible at the front then have the back to suit weight distribution i guess rather than getting it as low as possible.

Cheer Gav,Im sure there standard, I will Tub them at some point though!

Nic, the only times it srapes on things, is those annoying speed bumps that are like an island in the middle of the lane instead of going all the way accross!

Front never scrubs on arches, rear only does occasionally, normally when loaded up with camping gear.

Hi,
New on here so be gentle. i have just read this post with great interest at how low some of you run your cars.

I have just measured my 1993 Mini (Italian Job) and the ride height at sill measurements are 250mm front & 280mm rear.

I have 70mm clearance between the shell rear arch lip & the top of the tyre.

I have had a look at my driveshaft and they are already running upwards (towards the wheel) so if I lower it will make it worse.

To get the driveshaft level I would have to raise the car a good 25mm at the front but i want it 50mm lower all round (will be tubbing the rear)!!!.

The car is running 13" wheels with 175/50/13 does anybody else have this problem or is it normal to have the driveshafts like this??.

Cheers

Paul

Hi,
Welcome a board!
Just looked at mine, exactly the same as yours. Drive shaft pointing up to the wheel 250 front and 270 rear. If any one can give us some info that could help...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Interesting .... I'll try to measure my road car when I am next near her ...... sure she is lower than that (not getting much lower and still usable around here!!) I am fairly confident the driveshafts are level.... 175/50/13s too .... as it should be *wink*

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...
