Well, 1380s do seem to survive, but I'd go 1293. Then you've got the block longer. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

The Montego/ Maestro 1.3 block is an A+ block, as has already been said, the oil filter is above the starter. No reason why this would be any different boring to 1380 than a normal A+ block. The block will also fit the Transverse transmission, though i do not know what is required to make it so, i dont think its much.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

couldent you retain the vw gearbox? therefore the problems of the normall mini box? as i know most vw gearboxes are rock solid. On 19th Feb, 2011 Miniwilliams said:

If you add 40cm of gearbox on one side of the Mini engine. Will it fit?

I've heard of no reliablity problems with expensive pistons used. I'm guessing you'll have to buy pistons either way. a 1380 will make the same power as the 1293, but with less boost. You could go the other way, use the same boost but have more power :)
