there a valve in the std set up that can let unfiltered oil to the bearings in some circumstances

The filter housing on the block has a bypass valve which can let oil bypass the filter to the detriment of the bearings in the engine. If you fit a remote filter to the existing outlets all the oil is filtered.

In Greame's case he's probably done him self a favour as in auto testing the oil will be going all over the place. The extra volume in the filter, head and lines will limt the chance of oil starvation. As he has the original filter to stop the crap getting into the mains / big ends there is no loss of function. I am also guessing that as a competition engine it gets a far bit of TLC thus if there was an issue with the pump it would be spotted before total failure.

As I said previously, some of the issues you would get on other engines using gear pumps are vastly reduced by the A series's frankly excellent gyrotor type oil pump (obviously this assumes a good quality, well made pump is used). The only issue with a gyrotor is that when it wears it get bad very quickly!!

Hi,
The standard Rover filter head has a bypass valve built into it, whereas a remote housing doesn't.

stoke-on-trent

can you actually rid yourself of the valve without using a remote filter setup or is it just easier to do it as a remote setup?

Several companies do a bypass less filter head for the standard position.

You can mod the standard one but it's a PITA

ive done alot of head scratching over block take offs, was gonna do cheapo kits and sell them on here/ebay, but didnt bother in the end as i didnt hit a design that would suit anyone and everyone, without doubling the price form £15 or so to about £25 using a very low profile 90degree swivel adapter from america with a minimum order quantity of 100...

my gripe with the kit minispares sell is that they have the hose coming straight out of the block, so will likely foul with anything in that space, or have to buy a 90 degree adaptor (which nullifies the space saving unless you get a special low profile one...groan...)

so i tried make a block which can use the std gasket, and diverts the oil flow straight out the side, like below:

this fits fine on A blocks, but the ribbing on A+ prohibits this without moving the takeoff out further, which i didnt want to do so i went upwards on the final mock up:

but again, this has limitations as it would interfere with people running the std larger alternators.

I still have lengths of alloy blocks and about 50 sets of 1/2bsp adapters to fit hoses to takeoff and blocks.

(If anyone needs any let me know btw)

Also bolt length is critical, as if you use bolts too long, they will end up intruding into the path of the no.2 bigend, youve been warned!

Rogers point about priming issues are worth noting, but most modern filters (VW, volvo for definate) have one way valves because for this reason, so if you use one of them i doubt youll have any problems.

Ive still got my one Joe, I finally managed to get it out of the box yesterday.lol

It should do the job nicely. :)

My original filter housing was modified by using a gallery plug and sticking it in the hole, i know of others who do it this way and seen no probs so far, plus its the cheapest :)

I think you'll find that SH acutally make the ones for swiftune too, very nice, and they don't have the bypass valve so ideal.

They look quite tasty, I'll have a measure up and see how much clearance ive got.

It would be easier to use something like that, than run hoses all over the place. *oh well*

The bypass in the stock filter head basically allows crap to pass through it.

Since the unipart 'premium' filter is now NLA, and I don't trust aftermarket filters (never have) I'm looking at making a filter head to take a quality OEM filter that i can easilly get hold of.

All you need is a flexible hose from the top banjo fitting going to the oil cooler, another hose from oil cooler to the remote filter block then another hose from that to the adaptor block (where old fiter housing was). 3 hoses only the length of them will determin where things can be fitted.

Ive been into one of the main filter manufacturers and you be surprised how many of the different brand filter are made in the same factory! *wink*

Its more of a "better being safe than sorry" with regards to having a maget in the filter but if your fitting a remote housing there is nothng stopping you from making a blcok adaptor with a built in magnet/swarf trap.

Ive never had an after market filter fail! *oh well*

WOW im glad i read this post! had no idea there was a bypass valve in the oil filter housing. Right looks like i will be doing a remote systerm to. If it helps any one i work for a company that buys and sells alot of fitting mainly BSP so 1/2bsp isn't a problem also hose should be easy to get. PM me if you are finding any fittings hard to get.
Thanks
Alex.
