Hi,
I've earthed the ECU to the engine, like Rover did.
Everything I've read about my ECU keeps going on and on about the earths...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Grounding the ECU to anything other than the engine or the battery is not a good idea unless you know you have a very good ground path to the battery. You also need to have a very good ground strap to the engine if that is what you use as a grounding point. It's also a good idea to ground the WBO2 controller to the same point as the ECU.

The ideal setup would be to find a common grounding point and from that point run a BIG wire directly to the battery. This will minimize noise and voltage loss.

OK, so i should not ground the ECU to the bodywork.

However, I have 10.2volts at the ECU when I have 9.5v at the starter. The coil and injectors are earthed at the same point as the ECU, so also get 10.2v. That should help with starting.

Until last weekend, everything was running fine, so I do not consider that the grounds are preventing it from running.

I will improve the grounds at some point.

The 5 amp fuse for the fuel pump and a 25 amp for the coil pack were a bit iffy.

I think that the fuel pump one was a bit on the small side, so upped that to 10 amp.

The coil pack one.......... well I think that may be another clue.

The coil pack resistance measures 0.6 ohms as it should.

However, does this necessarily mean that the coils are OK?

Hi,
You should only need a 10 for the coil pack.
So if you're warming up a 25 you could have a bad connection or too long on coil charge time?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

25A!

I'm sure I've seen 15A quoted,

as for the fuel pump 10A as below.

Hi,
Sounds about right, although I think I've only got one setting at 3ms, batt compensation is done by the brain on mine?

I dont know why I've got 25a for the coil pack, but I've just changed it for a 10a. A minute or so of cranking did not blow it.

I bought a pack of fuses by Blackspur off ebay. They are crap. You can put them in OK but when you try to remove them for inspection, the plastic bit comes of and the thin metal conductor gets bent. This then creates a weak point that fails before the actual fuse link!

wind it up to 6 and 3 for and see if it makes a difference.

I ran 3.1 on my Sagem coil pack and had nice fat blue spark.

Just something to consider

OK,

So what ignitor chips are in your MS - the standard VB921 chips are internally limited to 7amps so should not melt a 20Amp fuse holder

The ISL9V5036P3 (which i'm going to use and some of the MS suppliers are now supplying instead anyway) are not current limited so need the fuse, and if the dwell is set wrong they will pull too much current and cook the fuse and/or coilpack.

I tried the MS recommended maximums of 6.0 & 3.5 this afternoon.

If it not the coil pack, then the engine is coming out!

Mine is definately fitted with the VB921 ignition drivers. I've just looked at the fuse case agian and it may be a manufacturing fault rather than overheating.

I know that I did blow a fuse supplying the coil pack when I had a problem previously due to some poor wiring. That must have been when I fitted the 25.

Hi,
I've seen that before, like you say can be 2 causes. Crap fuses or high resistance, good chance of one caused by the other *wink*

OK,

If they're original VB921 chips, are they both inside the MS box and, if so, do the connections to the coilpack come out through the standard BD37 connector or is there an additional connector to the MS box specifically for the coilpack ???

Sorry if that sounds a stupid question (again) but it's all down to current carrying capacity, which is my dilema at the moment.

(hence my first question - which fuse holder melted...)

Both the VB921s are in the box and come out through the DB37 connector.

I've fitted an extra wire to connect SPR4 directly to the DB37 pin as recommended:
