don’t want really want to introduce any doubt into this equation. But would a dog box really help that much?

crash gear boxes were the norm then syncro was invented, seems abit daft to go back when there isn’t really much to prove (i haven’t seen it yet, there might be however) they are stronger then a straight cut decently engineered gear set.

i even believe f1 used syncros`s some 10 odd years ago, i believe a motor cycle gearbox engineer suggested the idea to them.

I think the reason was so they could change gear ratios in the pits ect ect.

However that’s evidently not practical for us.

The only reason I think it’s wise to change to a dog box is because of the ratio’s you can choose between.

Like you said it’s going to be expensive to find out, there has only really been high rpm usage of them to find out if they are good. Not high torque like your engine.

i think the best thing for you would be to get the 4th gear made into an over drive gear and run a 3.44 final drive or similer.

my mini does 70 at 4123 with 2.9 final drive 1:1 drop ratio and 1:1 top gear. 195/45/13 tyres.

but with a 3.44 it does it at 4950 thats a diffrence of 827 revs and to be honest if you have sound deadning it wont make that much diffrence.

i think the best solotion would be to trannex drop gears at the ratio of 0.958 and a 3.2 final drive. meaning you could sit at 70 at 4400 revs 277 above what it would be now.

thats barely noticeable, however one thing to take into consideration would be the drop gears of course you would have to find out about them.

sorry if any of my calculations were wrong. but they seemed roughtly correct thinking back to a 6000rpm plus motorway run i did a few days ago.

But aren't the gears wider in a dog box due to there being no syncs/baulks etc?

I that’s a very good point jay, I didn’t think of that.

More surface area would mean more strength, and being straight cut would mean basicly no side loadings.

Hi,
Do g boxes are stronger due to the wider gears, also there's no syncro stuff to wear out!
Matt, If you go for a road test let the rest of us know what you think *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Matt - seriously, if you find your way over to the Severn bridge or further into Wales, then stop by Jimbos and have a go of his transmission.

I also suggest that you call Nick swift, and talk to him about your transmission problems. I am sure the gearset can be turned into a wide ratio (maybe even with something like a 2.6/2.7 first gear with a headset change (the two gears nearest the flywheel).

70 in first what are you on about lol.

unless of course your engine revs to 8k

has a metro challenge gearset

a 2.76 final drive

and economy drop gears.

65 is close enough :)

All my Racers have Swifty gear sets bar one which has the MS set I drove 3 of them on a private road next to my house and have to say Id fit a swifty dog set in my daily any day it was quiter than the MS S/C and the up shift was faultless the down shift is a little tricky to master if its you first time but once you get familiar with it all of about 5 mins for me it worked seamlessly on the up and down change for me cant praise the design enuf.
regards,
Paul.

christ. its hard enough to slip the cluch with a 3.44 final drive and normall gears let alone what ive stipulated above.

ive had to do that through the town before when the roll pin dropped out :(
