These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

that has to be a hoax

Indeed that was a hoax, but there was a guy with a Mustang that flushed his engine with a garden hose in the oil filler (with the engine running) between oil changes. That one was real!

As Benross says, the gay pink banner on TMF says it all really.

i did see a picture of a diff that had been welded... however they had welded the pinion to the crownwheel and asked if they did it right?

What about the guy that welded a small plate over every other vane on his turbo to make it come on boost sooner?

No meaning to look stupid, what is the cause of the noise?

Helical gears were designed to be quiet and I always assumed that the gradual interlocking of the gear teath made them quiet, where as the fact that the whole tooth meshes at once with straight cut gears makes them noisy.

The exact mechanism for the noise I'm not so sure about.

Don't forget the twit who left a load of swarf in his inlet manifold *blush*

Noise from staight cuts is caused by metal to metal contact and the resultant vibrations within the metal structure.

Well, why are SC (or spur) gears noisier than helical?

I'd guess with helical there is more metal surface area in contact and more gear teeth touching other teeth at any one time compared with spur gears where this is the minimum. The more total metal is in contact the more noise is attenuated.

Make sense? Hence quieter gears! 8-)

Edit, well ok that doesnt really give you a picture of what is going on

Imagine a car leaving a nice smooth curved launch ramp. On its way down to earth again if it were to land on another ramp allowing it to meet the ground gradualy, the resultant impact is dramaticaly reduced on both launch and landing

Similar situation but the launch ramp is a simple wedge and there is no landing ranp at the other end, the impact on both launch and landing is severe.

Helical gears are like the first with a gradual contact, which is actually spread over more than one tooth, while straight cut gears (spur gears) are like the second with an almost instantanious contact on pretty much just one tooth.

Another thing that contributes is the gear mesh clearance or backlash and straight cut gears have a fairly large backlash.

Thats the one, I posted it a while back, lol, the read was hilarius.

Reminds me of thread of the bloke that wrote off his Skyline GTR on a perfectly straight road on a pefrectly quiet evening, in the dry, and bragged about it lol. That thread went world wide and an epic 100+ pages within the week *laughing*
