David,

Did you loctite the screws in when you built it ?

My reservation about converting to duplex is the locktab is lost so I used Loctite 270 (I think 2701 is the new number), it is the highest strength of all their threadlocks.

TBH I don't use any of the locktabs on the engine (or anything else for that matter nowadays). IMO (and I know some will disagree) loctite is a much more modern solution. You just have to carefull you get the threads (especially the threaded holes) clean first.

Otherwise, I think you were very unlucky or it was a poor quality chain, this is what I found a couple of years ago

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=190633

and the chain was hardly marked.

No, Rod, and I have never had to loctite them before.

Just bad luck I guess, which seems to be following me around at the moment.

One things for sure, when this engine is rebuilt and run in its due for a right good thrashing.

Remember, life is short, eat dessert first.

(Not original, I heard it recently)

The thing with those two bolts (now countersunk setscrews) is they only get tightened to a low torque because of their small thread size. But there is a large gasket behind the main plate that is mostly compressed by larger bolts but only around its outside edge.

So the bit where these two small bolts/setscrews are won't be compressed as well so will settle in service (temperature cycles) so allow the setscrews to loosen.

That's my logic for loctite in this particular case.

The other "old skool" solution is to centre punch the outer circumference of the head of the setscrew right on the interface with the plate (in 2 or 3 places) - that stops them unscrewing even if they come loose.

Well, Minispares did rather let me down on delivery, due to a mix-up between Potters Bar and Harrogate as to who was going to deal with me -I blame Potter Bar as I have always found the Yorkshire lot very helpful.

At 2.30 yesterday the parts arrived and the engine was on the floor with the head off and no timing gear.

At 3.45 today I started the engine.

The sodding water system for the turbo is leaking, up behind the turbo !!

Time for some more alcohol I think !

Fixed the water leak this morning and took it for a short drive, with the actuator set to give only 6 psi and no bleed.
I owe an apology to Tom, because a short trip has stopped all the smoking -I think.

Trying to be objective, and because it needs a little running in, I did not use a lot of revs, but it moves into positive boost around 1600rpm and 1000 rpm later its on the 6psi limit.Hurrah for GT17,s and MG N/A cams !!

It will pull from 1500rpm in 5th gear and feels just like a modern engine in that it has seemingly seamless power.

Well worth the agony -so far anyway.

Hopefully on 15 psi it will impress me even more ?.

Quick update.

Now well run in and ignition and mixture tweaked so that it just keeps on pulling at almost any revs.

Of to Slarks on 7th June for the final set up -roll on Avon Saturday.
