Just doing a bit of post excavation. But would anyone happen to have some pictures of some side mount radiator setups with electric fans & no mechanical fan.

I want to ditch the mechanical fan on my build without going front mounted if possible.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I have a 1993 car with an electronic fan in the inner wing, however this is only a supplemental fan which drags air out from the engine bay across the radiator.

My thoughts were to keep this in place but also fit an electronic fan to the other side of the radiator blowing across it thus removing the mechanical fan from the equation.

I would obviously like to seal this setup as thoroughly as possible to ensure that the air actually flows across the radiator.

I am curious about what fan to use on the engine side of the rad? And would it be good enough? Would I need an alloy rad or just a Minispares 2 Core?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Anybody tried fitting the standard metal cowling to the inner wing-side of the rad and fitting an elec. fan to that?

It is not a problem fixing a leccy fan to the outside of the side mounted rad and removing the mechanical fan. They cool the water a treat. However as soon as the fan switches off the water temp shoots straight back up as there is marginal airflow through the rad. Following a truck is enough to have your fan on permanently. Most of these fans nicked off other cars are not designed to be on all the time so it's unlikely that they would last too long before failing.
I reckon this setup might work ok if the rad position could be twisted 45 degrees towards the near side front tyre, allowing air to flow through it.

Take the rad over and ask you're Martin to make it fit before the car gets painted. He'll be able to do it in his sleep...

I use a electric fan from Radtec with no mechanical fan, side mounted. The switch comes on at 86 degrees and goes off at 74. Its not on very often to be honest.
I also use a Radtec alu radiator but you could use a 2 core just as well.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Not the same installation I know, but on my Midas I replaced the standard Metro fan with a Pacet which takes up much less space and is more efficient

Both my minis (a stock 1098 & a not very stock at all 1430cc) run without a pulley driven fan. Both normally aspirated, running stock radiators with scrapper electric fans, one Nissan and the other Suzuki.

I prefer to remove the original mini fan, radiator and shroud & mount the radiator to the body with the fan drawing through from under the wheel arch.

Good enough for 40 C + temperatures here in Oz.

Tips:
- make sure fan is blowing the right way
- use the factory shroud that cam with the leccy fan
- don't use long screws as they can pierce the radiator core :$

Oh, also makes the engine bay look cleaner & gives more room to work.

yeah that does look clean AWDmoke man. Do you have a build thread?

Dazibee the wheel arch experiences low pressure along with air coming in through the grille air should only exit the engine bay.

As promised, some engine bay shots

Not running any fan at all temporarily as I'm about to do some rewiring.

and these are the surplus bits. Should help offset the weight of the thermo fan.

Note that you'll need shorter bolts for the water pump pulley without the fan fitted.

Can't take any shots of the Countryman as its been stripped & getting a new motor and subframe.

Old thread revival!!!

I've been thinking about losing the mechanical fan as it should make the engine a bit more responsive and warm up quicker.
I'm going to be running a minispares 2 core rad.
I've seen in the recent mini mag a advert for this fan....
http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/...k%20to%20search

Is this kit designed to get rid of the mechanical fan? If so do you reckon it'll be up to the job of keeping a turbo mini cool?
Going to make some kind of closing plates between the rad and the inner wing aswell to help air go through the rad.

My build thread..

I used that kit without a mechanical fan.

I had issues keeping it cool at high speed but it was not the fan it was a few other issues. In traffic the fan was great.

I was using a radtec evo rad though so very efficient.

I did not pay that for it though!
Edit: ok can't find it anywhere cheaper, must of gone up in price.
