Clutch now off, all seems ok, except some contamination (will start seperate thread for that) primary gear ok. Clicking noise was only the starter motor pinion. Have drive from primary gear to wheels and vise versa. Will investigate the pot joints and driveshafts some more later

Mate, mine was odd as the shaft had going in the pot jont, If you had the hub off and pulled the shaft you would see if anything Is not playing the game.

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

I had an issue with intermittent drive not long ago. it would just stop moving as if it had jumped out of gear.
Every time we looked for a problem with the drive shafts / joints, there appeared to be nothing wrong.
Just before we were about to pull the engine AGAIN, I noticed the out CV rubber was slightly twisted.

The retaining clip on the outer end of the drive shaft had broken in half and released the shaft. I imagine that as I had to have it on full left hand lock to get it out from its normal parking place, that was enough to eventually pull the splines out of the cage.
One half of the clip was in the cage and the other half in the CV boot once we got it a part.

Just a thought...

Im so glad i spotted my speedo was reading mph as this led me to the driveshaft rather than taking out the engine to check it over

Driveshaft had snapped inside the pot joint next to the circlip.

Must have a fair amount of torque and grip to do that! :)

I was pulling my hair out when I did mine, as I had pulled the engine to bits before hand !

if that has snapped at the ring , does that mean it was not fully engaged ?

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

The last 10mm of driveshaft plus circlip is still engaged In the pot joint. Snapped off clean. Was a 10psi start and snapped just when I would of expected wheel spin to happen. Was driving in a straight line

So I have fixed this with another old driveshaft I have...
The way forward? Treat driveshafts as fuses and keep changing them rather than gearbox components?
Or get better driveshafts and hardy slicers.
Simon, when yours broke in the same place were you using uprated driveshafts?
Are most people using standard driveshafts and doing ok?

It can't have been inserted fully? Otherwise the splines in either the pot, or on the shaft, would've been chewed up where it had spun?

All i know is the last 10mm of driveshaft plus circlip is still stuck inside the old pot joint. It stayed engaged for 1700 miles

Nothing has spun
it has snapped

For it to have snapped as it has, one part must have been rotating whilst the other wasn't (or at east at different speeds). So if both parts of the shaft were securely in the pot joint, then something must have spun.

The small section would stay in - once its broken off there's nothing to really make it come out.

I don't think it has inserted properly, maybe the circlip didn't engage and it has walked its way out until the groove was at the edge and then the torque has caused it to neck.
Check there is a circlip groove in the pot joint - I vaguely remember some repros a couple of years ago that didn't (or it was the wrong size).

still kinder impressive to twist a driveshaft off on a mini Evan it it was not fully engaged on the splines

have to agree that if the shear point is only 10mm or so from the end of the shaft, it hasn't been located fully; I'm assuming at the break, the shaft does look like it has twisted?

It must of spun if you have no drive.

The only bit giving the drive could of been the very end. Which is not ideal and probably why it broke.
