From my experience of "interesting" boost levels, the head gasket was the first thing to go. There were no signs of detonation & the timing was not heavily retarded, though the mixture was run on the rich side as a precaution.

Jimmy, before you get too bogged down in the old 30 psi thing, I thought I would direct you to a useful post I did ages ago, (as mini1071s), all about boost and air flow which I hope you will find useful :)
