Plymouth, On the floating skip known as HMS Albion

Have you tried a different type of starter i.e inertia and not pre-engaged?
Its sounds like Tom suggested ring gear winding into flywheel hence locking it in place

Whats going to break next!?

pre verto ring gear can be fitted to a verto flywheel.

The pre verto ring gear is different as it has angled edges on the inner wing side-this goes with a inertia starter

verto ring gear has plain teeth-this goes with pre engaged starter(the one with the solinoid on top)

Hi,
I'm a little confused by the post mentioning the solenoid? If your using a pre engaged starter (read Verto) then you dont need a solenoid as it's built into the starter motor. So is your starter motor one cylinder shaped lump or two cylinder shaped lumps, piggybacked together?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

its one cylinder shaped lump with the starter solenoid fixed to the wing.

So am i using the wrong starter, assuming that i have the verto ring gear do i need a pre engaged starter?

Cheers matt

IIR then if there is 1 termainal on the starter then you need a solinoid, if there is 2 then you dont.....

actually just checked.

You should have a seperate solinoin if you starter has 1 (screw) terminal on it.

If not you strater will have a built in solinoid at the bottom of the unit. This will have 1 screw terminal and 2 spade terminals

yer its got one terminal on it, just looked at the ring gear well felt it as its in car and couldnt see it all that well but def feels sharper on the edges than the one on my other enginewhich is def verto,

so im wondering if the one on my new engine is a non-verto ring gear?!

think il try the non-verto starter and see if that works cos both starter motors iv tried so far are verto!

Eh?!

The inertia type starter, which uses a seperate solenoid mounted on the inner wing mates with the EARLY type NON-VERTO flywheel. From what you have been saying, this is the type of starter you have been using.

The pre-engaged type starter, with the solenoid built on the side, mates with the VERTO type flywheel.
