Sprox,

If you read that link you posted above, it says that you need 30 psi in the head and 15 psi in the rad. The pressure difference is caused by the flow through the thermostat.

Hence, you have a total head of 15 psi, (30 -15)or approx. 10 metres water head.

If you omit the thermostat, you will not get the cooling system to work properly at all.

Alex thats what i have been trying to say, but, what the hell, if thats what people are doing then it must work, right?*oh well*

I will fit a transducer in the block and one on the rad and measure whats what that way we will know the pressure difference at least

Will give it a try on my swift engine together with a 3-core rad, std thermostat.

Speed is not everything, volume is important as well. Do you piss 13 litres a minute? *wink*

Look at it this way if the mechanical pump was to sap only 1/2 hp, the electrical pump would have to do the same work, thats a current draw of 31 amps, or a wattage of 372w.

Having said that, people have got away with a lot less and not had any major problems.

You are assuming that the Mechanical pump and the electric pumps are as efficient as each other.

GRR, Hypathtical. Thats why I said' say 1/2hp' I was also being conservative and then said that people have got away with less. So what are you picking at? lol

Just saying that directly comparing the power required to drive the pumps may not be the best means of comparison.

Jeees, now you've made me use big words :)

Right, this evening i knocked up this:

Although i then realised that the water is flowing the other way to which i was thinking just to make life difficult.

So, i then need to get another tank going to the inlet, fill this one above the impeller, mark the level, and work out the difference.

My main problem is gravity and it improving the flow of the pump as it seems to push quite a bit of water through, and i need to make the face the same thickness as the block

That should work a treat mate!

Can't you strengthen the sealing face by making up a couple metal plates to sandwich the plastic side?

Bit of a PITA to make but can't see another way round it?

It' all well and good doing that BUT the impellor is not open to a tank of water when it is fitted so I would question wether the test is valid.

But wouldn't the tank of water kind of replicate a bit of pressure or at least give some resistance?

If you did the test 3 times and took the average flow, then drill a hole in the bottom of the box and drain it into another container you could test the difference of flow between the pump with and without resistance.

Yet another pump i've found. Still not got the balls to buy one yet.

But this one has a nice graph of flow rate for you all to look at..

Sprock has it on the nose - 80l/min minimum is the flow needed. The ickle Bosch ones at 30l/min are ok for reciruc on shutdown - strangely enough thats what they are designed for or for a chargecooler circuit

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

OT but thanks for that link Sproc. I like this quote form the site:

Quote - "regarding the Focus RS:
twin turbo 5? what big one, little one or has someone worked out some funny exhaust to split one cylinder in two(maybe have 1 port feed the left turbo,t'other the right turbo)?"

Answer- One turbo gets three cylinders, the other turbo gets the remaining two cylinders. The deficit is made up by pumping hot air into turbo-2 from the cabin where the owner is rambling on about how great the car is to anyone who will listen and a lot of people who won't.

*happy*
