I left school with 11 GCSE's, went to college for 3 years and got 5 A-levels then worked as a chef for 3 years. I finally got round to going to uni, where i did a BEng in Control and Instrumentation.

I 'm now employed as a graduate Instrument Engineer working on Offshore and Onshore Oil & Gas Installations.

The really important thing is that the company i work for has a well established developement scheme, so i should be chartered in 3 years time.

Im a Network Manager, look after about 500 machines on a college university campus.

Im self taught largely and worked my way up from Digital Media Developer, Network Analyst and finally manager.

Did business at college then realised i was better with computers.

Im in my mid 20's and id say the wage is fairly good

Im aiming to do some more qualifications in project management (Prince2) to forward my career.

I'm a scientist! It took 8 years at uni to get here but sadly it was all wasted as I am now a mainly brain dead empty husk with an allergy to stress.

Snap.

Big house, bit of spare cash, shit health.

At least you have a house and cash. They're paying me £5k less a year than I'm entitled too and looking at the housing market I have no hope of buying a hovel let alone a house unless I find a Mrs. I have more chance of getting MRSA than an Mrs. Although... which would be worse? Hmmm...

Interesting seeing all of those Apprenticeships and technical qualifications that are not degrees, I always maintain that its the lack of those types of qualifications thats killing the USA at the moment. Here its a degree or nowt, which has degraded them

Myself, I left secondary school at 16, before I took any CSE's and joined the RAF as a Craft Apprentice in Air radar. That got me a C&G telecoms tech and a single GCE in physics, (just to prove I could do it)I re-traded to flight simulators after a couple of years and did my 12 years.

I then joined a medical company repairing and servicing CT scanners and have been happy doing that for 23 years now, I had my chances of advancement but prefer tools in my hand and that my customers are always happy to see me!! This is the best type of job, If you are really good at your stuff things don't break down much and you are not snowed under...

But things are changing, management seem to think that modern electronics can be repaired by monkeys, maybe because that all they can get hold of from the Uni's --- Guys like me will soon be a thing of the past

So I am looking forward to retirement now... 7 years 2 months 18 days
