Sorry, yes - I don't doubt the play in the bearings.....

What I was saying is don't jump to conclusions ie, fix the next known problems (play in the turbo bearings) and see the effect on oil pressure, rather than making a significant change to another turbo and then never knowing which caused what.

But, as I said, that's just my opinion. I try to resolve things methodically, one thing at a time :)

not wanting to butt in but i am confussed with stuff written earlier, i always thought that the oil went through pump then out to the oil filter then to the galleries which is where the oil pressure relief valve is, am i wrong

On the "standard" block, the route is suction filter, back of gearbox, through O ring, pump suction..... then pump to an angled drilling that goes to the banjo bolt, but this drilling also Tees off to the relief (actually should be called a regulating) valve which drops the excess straight back to the sump.

Then through the external pipe to the filter and then back into the galleries.

Sprocket has noted the MPI blocks are different, relief/regulating valve after the filter - which is a good modification - but all "standard" blocks are the same to my knowledge, regulating valve before the filter.

See Vizard Page 428 for a diagram. Vizard isn't allways right but, to the best of my knowledge, that diagram is right for all pre-MPI blocks.

im sure you know this ,but , there should be play on a plain bearing turbo ,just not enough to let the wheel touch the sides !

indeed,

there should be vertually none in and out, buta fair amount side to side (or upo and down) you should be looking at about 0.2mm (10 ish thou) which feels huge

Nah its major mate. TBH i had it running earlier and heard what sound like a squirrel being fed into the turbo at high speed! Plus to add to the dippression factor, the engine speed drop when i engage the the clutch *crying* I really did feel like crying earlier i tell ya! Proper pissed off but ive started to look on the bright side. I i pull the engine it will give me chance to paint the engine bay and make it all lovely and clean.

Just a note about your oil cooler above the engine. I mounted mine like this once, years ago. The car drove for a day with good oil pressure, then the oil pressure dropped right off. I had that engine out & stripped three times looking for the problem, & couldn't find anything wrong. Tried everything. Moved the oil cooler lower & hey presto !

Just a thought.

Cheers phil, this was more than likely the original cause of the problem, but i think some damage has been done, so for peace of mind im going to pull the engine before anything else dies. My plan is to drill a hole in the thrusts too, ala carl austin style. Also whilst out im going to sort out the engine bay as everything is caked in oil and chips. So this will be sorted. Should have it back on the road within 2 week.

If you are coming to Rushden to pick up the Gt17, then pop in for a cuppa. I'm just a few miles away.

Right my fellow TM Chums, got the engine in this aft and popped the flywheel off, took the transfer housing off and discovered some big fuck off clumps of silicon sealant!

Hi,
What type of silicon sealer did you use?
