So the moral of the story is; anything over about 130bhp and a twin pin diff is ESSENTIAL........

How about a 'file test' to see how hard this pin really is at the surface?

That looks like it was significantly softer than the pinions?

hmm good idea dave,

the stuff on the pin end is where it had welded part on the case to itself as it rotated at high speed with the gear .

the planets look worse ill get them out of the case and put up a piccy ,looking at the tempering marks on the pin
id say that the planet wheels wore ,then friction welded itself to the pin ,and the heat removed the hardening on the pin , ,the end that isnt so worn ,has a worm pinion but it hads not got hot enough to remove the heat treat from the pin yet ,so id say its harder than the planets ,but once it gets hot enough it goes soft .ill run a file over it and see .

some more pics ... the pin shot with the little shiny patch is where i tried to make a mark with about 7 strokes of a file ende on ,,,,so it is pretty hard .
the other pics show palnet gears and the roll pin ,which seems to have wrapped itself round the pin in some way .

robert,

i have been reading this thread as i have exactl the same symtom, ie boot down and at about 60 on it starts weaving... a lot!

dunno how much power i'm running, but i'm on a bar of boost so could be getting toward 150ish hp.

anyway from this post it looks like the weaving was still there after the mods to decrease the offset, yes?

did swaping the diff cure/reduce this?

oh and yes i know the suspension is straight as just had it aligned.

well bit of an update here ,

after various nightmares on the diff front and the same prob being there when using the higher power ,
i decided to get a 4 pin diff and see if i could get it in there withuot taking the engine out ..
well the good news is yes you can and you can also get the pinion out with the engine in ,
so you can change diff ratio which im doing .

the bad news is ,
i was thinking i could sell my comp diff pin new everything single pin diff that was coming out ....

so i looked at the diff after getting it out and thought hmmm ,should that diff pin be rotating when i spin the gears

I DONT THINK SO !!!!!!!

yep .
the pin was welded to the planet gear ,and had eaten the roll pin !!

it was freely spinning ,and how far i was from a self dissasembling diff case i shudder to think ....P.H.E.W.!! here are some pictures
this pin a genuine competition pin ,,with all new gears and bushes etc,run on valvolene vr1 20/50 ,and has done about 3 k miles ..enjoy

*happy* happy to have got away with this so far , i feel this was the steering prob .

i thikn the combo of the 10mm less outset ,and the 4 pin diff combined to transform it joe ,at avon it was dead straight on all passes ,
but at santa pod ,it did have a bit of a weave at about the 60 to 90 mark , and i put this down to appallingly poor grip on the falkens .if i could id have 25 to 30 mm inset on the wheels ,but i feel its possible that even the 4 pin diff is binding up a bit and throwing the power from left to right at higher power ,whatever that is to run 104 terminals .

Ok thats good info,

hopefully it should be better once the quafe diff finds its way in,

I'll have a measure up of the offset but i know its going to be huge as the wheels are 7x13.

also i need to look at the corner weights at some pint as they are just guestimate, plus the shocks need winding up a bit too.

plus i need to look at the wastegates and map sensor at the weekend, last nights datalog breifly showed 260kpa of boost *surprised**surprised**surprised*

hmmmm,

maybe i should get a 4 bar one....

seriously though, a couple of screws had worked loose in the exteral wasgtegate so it wasn't opening, this had then poped the pipe of the one for the vanes so the only thing limiting boost was the shut vanes stifling the exh flow.
