After Nick popped round to help and discovered last night there was a huge inlet leak due to the turbo inlet fouling the mirage and not sitting low enough, i took it off last night, filed it down and reassembled. Fired it up this morning and after a bit of a warm up i could get it to idle around 1000rpm after this vid and found a very small inlet leak still there. Going to take it back off again tomorrow and have another look at it, but heres a vid of it at around 1500rpm?

Swansea boyo!

Still not up and running! Still having trouble with the inlet manifold causing an air leak!

Will be trying the mg metro one we have tomorrow and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Yeah I guess if a manifold bend is ever so slightly different it will cause problems. The problem would have been spotted a lot sooner if it was put on outside of the car first. Carls been taking it on and off all weekend trying to stop it, it was whistling this morning the leak was so small haha. I never really considered how difficult it is to do a 998 conversion, there's so much more faffing than you think for someone doing in the first time! Makes me appreciate peoples builds a lot more now though. Plus if anyone ever thought about doing it we could point them in the right direction and let them know what to look out for *happy*

Ive just read your build nice work *smiley*

and a 998 can be a right faff everythings the same but also a little different. But I like them more than a 1275 *smiley*

I had an air leak like this and it made a right noise! There was about 10 of use playing with it at avon trying to work it out!

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

Nick popped around a few days ago and found it first, it's been leaking less every time the inlets been put back on but it's still there :(.

It's probably worth trying an MG inlet as that's what they're designed to be used with. Might end up saving a lot of hassle.

On a side note to the manifold, can you get heavier washers onto the studs? The ones in the photo look like they wont give as much clamping pressure. Granted, its hard to tell from the photo angle if you could fit thrm or not

maybe a tiny dent in the exhaust pipes would clear the inlet with no detriment?

You can't get the manifold washers in between the outer exhaust and inlet bolts, i do have the large washers in the centre though, these mirage manifolds are nothing but a pain in the arse!

You just have to cut them down to fit mate.

I struggle to get the bolts in, any more thickness to the washers and i definitely wouldn't get them in

You fit the bolts with the manifold slid slightly back, then drop the inlet in after if using a turbo one.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Also I slot the inlet to make it easyer to fit in a rush.

I had the same issue with a turbo inlet fouling the exhaust, the NA one was better but still not great for clearance tbh.

Apparently the mirage I have is one of the earlier ones, so maybe its something they rectified in the later ones?

You have an alloy inlet in your for sale thread, try that on for size. I'd cut the bottom locating lugs off it though so you can slide it in from the top assembled.

Yeah that's what we are going to try using next, I haven't got around to removing it from the for sale yet. I can't remember if we tried that one first or not though! I'm not sure how old our mirage is either but it's a pain!

Could it be a mirage clone? Unusual to find one without a downpipe?

I couldn't tell you, we got it from Nick who believed it was, most likely passed around!

Haha! Indeed! The manifold came from Kappa then. From my snooping I suspect he got it off eBay a couple of years ago, someone was knocking out manifolds cheap saying they were mirage.

The turbo well thats had a few owners lol! It was built by someone at CRturbo's who never used it then some guy used it on a 998 with a sidemount setup down devon way, then I bought it from him, then Matt Argent bought it off me for a friend of his, then he sold it and it eventually ended up in Kappa's hands, then Nick W bought it then you bought it! lol

Like pass the parcel! Show's how many turbo projects get abandoned!
