fwiw aswell as the last clutch i showed on here that had your twin spring setup, there was another clutch that i have seen lately wiht twin springs, only on this one one of the springs "fingers" was half the legnth, dotn quite understand the reasoning behind that but intersting anyways! ..

std clutch (mind im not on an a-series) coped with and started slipping at 155ft/lb the RTS has coped wiht up to 220ft/lb so far, stripped it the other week and its still all looking good, no abnormal stuff going on with the fingers rubbing together etc.

cheers :)

About 2/3 hours work and £10 for the bolts !!!!

Must first of all say thanks to Robert for the pioneering on this.

Took less than an hour on each cover to drill out the nine rivets. The hole in the cover was correct for M8 thread, so just tapped the nine holes.

I did not separate the cover from the pressure plate - no need.

The thick washers are K1200 head washers and came with the head I bought from JohnK a couple of weeks ago. The other washers came from B&Q and are exactly the right thickness.

I have two 3.2mm rings, two 2.4mm springs and 4.8mm of washers, giving a total thickness of 16mm which is the length of the shoulder on the bolts.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Google "AHC Camberley", that's where I got mine from and they are a bit cheaper.

I've spent another couple of hours fine tuning the clutch this morning. Not finished yet, but had to come in before my toes fell off. It's still freezing in my heated workshop !

The springs were not held central by the 10mm dia shoulders. The rivets were 11mm OD on this particular clutch. So I've turned up three collars, 11mm OD, 10mm ID, 10mm long and fitted them equally spaced on the shoulder bolts. The springs are now held in place better with just minimal play before you tighten the bolts.

I also think that I need slightly thicker washers to allow the bolts to tighten before the shoulder bottoms out. I see what I can find.

I used the 16mm ones. That's the length of the shoulder. The threaded ends are all the same length.

I'm now using 5.5mm of washers, so you could get away with the 15mm bolts and use thinner washers.

I took the finished clutch and a Minispares lightweight verto flywheel to MED this morning to be balanced. It only needed a minimum amount of material taking off the cover. Even Steve was impressed - no mean feat.

Also, I found that the MED five paddle sintered clutch plate is exactly the right thickness at 7.75mm meaning that I did not have to machine the flywheel lugs to get the springs flat.

Paul,

isnt the mi nispare lightweight flywheel a diferent height to roughly maximise clamping?

They say it is, but when I measured it gainst a standard flywheel, it was exactly the same *oh well*

Ha! bASTARDS!

Been playing with mine today Paul *wink*

On the verto's with the plate under the 9 rivets, the rivets are thinner (about 6.5mm) and have a 10.8mm dia spacer under the plate. the plate has 6.5mm holes for the rivets rather than the spacers passing through the plate.

I think having the plate there is a ood idea as it will support the top ring better than the bolts/washers every 30 odd degrees.

I think rather than the shoulder bolts this pate with std socket heads with a washer and a tube spacer underneath would be as good if not better than faffing around with several washers.

Oh also, has anyone got a later 190mm clutch plate to measure the diameter of? do they actually come out at 190mm or are they slightly over? as i have a 180mm plate that is 183mm dia...

Sounds Ok to me.

Easier to get the spacer the correct length than struggling making washers of the correct thickness.

this thread IS a how to, the rotating assembly of clutch and flywheel is a dangerous thing which could loose you limbs if screwed up hence roberts origional coment of "rotary grenade" i was certainly very nervous when i first tried mine. Harsh, but if you cant gleen the important information from this thread(and all the information is here) then you shouldnt build one.
