I have just about pulled my hair out in regards to my turbo. This may sound funny but heres what goes. I have set the wastegate acutator up to around 6psi. I start the car up ,warm it up to operating temp and then take it for a drive down the road near my work (can't drive to far as not road legal yet).

It will boost at 6psi for a run down the road and then i'll cruise at 60mph for a few miles. On the return journey the boost will hit 15psi. It is almost like the wastegate stops working and it is really pissing me off. It only seems to happen after it has been running for awhile.

I am hoping someone will help. It is a IHI VI13 turbo running a suck thru setup.

Thanks

It sounds like the wastegate itself is physically sticking closed when it gets hot, with the actuator disconnected from the wastegate arm how free is the wastegate arm? You should be able to flap it around by hand VERY easily. If it is tight or sticky when cold and trying to move it by hand this could be the cause of your problems when it gets hot.

Thanks for getting back to me tom. It seems not to bad when it is cold and the wastegate arm is disconnected. Also have tried putting air pressure in it and it is doing what it is meant to. It just seem the boost increases as it gets warmer

Hi,
It's obviously heat related, or something really weird!
Could it be the actuator sticking when heated, or a hole opening up in the diagphram allowing the boost to leak out and not push the rod?
Cheers,
Gavin:)

hmmm thats an idea. I am trying to get hold of another standard actuator at the moment. ALso wondering because it is so cold over here at the moment if it has anything to do with carb ice. As the intake ices up could it cause a boost increase?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

not cold related

try another actuator

if this fails, its a sticking waste gate heat related problem

you may need to pull the turbo off and try to sort this

That is an interesting one for sure!!!
And I'm unsure what to suggest LOL!

Maybe try connecting the actuator directly to the plenum for a start?

I am still conviced the wastegate itself is nipping up when hot, as I said above. Get it all hot and then remove the actuator and see how free the wastegate is. You need to do this to at least eliminate it as a cause.

staggy in case its of help , i have 2 ihi turbos here ,they both have stuck waste gate spindles .you can sometimes free them up by spraying with wd40 and working them back and forward ,or you can heat up the spindle and do the same ,interestingly thse ones tend to sieze with the flap open ,and so give far less boost rather than more .

Reminds me of the problem MG have with the variable maniflods on the KV6. There the problem was caused but oil leaking onto the butterflies and becoming baked on, with a little termal expansion they become stuck quite nicely. If you turbo is used there's a good chance a little oil will leak through into the turbine and could easilly become backed onto the the waste gate. Worth a look, the bad news is burnt on oil is a PITA to clean off.

Am I missing something here?
Robert has posted that he has two IHI units that have seized spindles; a scenario that is (only?) what sounds like could be your problem.

Surely a lightbulb has come on????

I suggested this 6 days ago. Seems the only logical reason for excessive boost to me. I've given up suggesting the same thing now.
