will not idle under 1500 if idle is reduced to under 1500 then it cuts out.

my engine has been rebuilt and we have checked everything else that we can think of to why it wont idle.

when i drove it, after laying off the throttle on engine breaking it cut out. but restarted again with no trouble

its a standard metro turbo. im only using a facet fuel pump at the moment but the can get the pressure right on idle and im only running it on low low boost at the moment cos want to sort the idleing out. i have a bosch pump off another car which can tak up to 10 bar. so i could use that but i have an inline fuel filter too and when the car cuts out the fuel filter is still full of fuel so i not sure if it is a fuel problem or not.

Give the mixture screw one turn clockwise and see if you can get the tickover lower. It might be running too lean.

Has the timing been set yet?

UPDATE

HElp needed. when the engine is started from cold it will ilde about 900 nicely. but once warm it will not go under 1500rpm. and if you try to run it under it will hunt and or stall.when driving it when warm down the road when you lay off the throttle it tends to cut out also. can anyone help. what could be wrong. we have tried lots of things and still no go. fuel pressure is correct, their doesnt seem to be any air leaks, we also checked the plugs and it appears to rich fuel micture so we turn it down a few and it kinda makes it worse. we have set the timing up as good as at the moment. any help wpuld be appricated!

How old is the carb? Worn old carbs can cause problems and be difficult to diagnose. Do you have another carb you could fit. A NA one will do just to check and eliminate it as a problem if nothing else.

thanks for the suggestions guys. and yea i do need it on a co2 test to check mixture but watever mixture it stil tned sto cut out. i havent got a spare carb. wel i hav a 1 and half inch carb wud that do the trick. it probably is something simple like oil in dashpot but no that has oil in it.

running out of ideas at the mo, although my dads mate is a specialist in metro turbos. he did say he would come and have a look if we stil have no joy. apprently the valve clearences are very very vital on the turbo. so we will be double checking them again. it all seems to be abit of a ball ache at the moment. also am i right in saying the butterfly thingy(cant remember waht my dad said and im not the expert either) they can be soldered up or blocked up or something this could be the cause too?

once it gets goin i will let u all no what it was, hope it does run anyway. i shouldnt see wwhy not as it boosts fine on low boost havent and dont want to turn up yet. and it idles fine when cold.

Ive been having the same with mine after an engine/carb rebuild.
Tried the idle mixture and moving the dizzy round but to no avail.
Then about an hour ago I thought I will try the pipes in case of air leaks so blanked the dumpvalve one and servo......No different

Then pinched and released the part throttle lean off pipe(its silicon on mine)

It idles at 1000 now

But I don't know if that was it or................

I had a bit of a squeely fanbelt so battery a bit low,but after running for a while its charged up.

as I know the electronic ign dont like low battery voltage so if your alt/or batt are on the way out could be a cause

Make sure the exhaust isnt blowing at all as this has stopped my mini and metro from idling correctly.

Hi,
Sounds like a small airleak to me. Get a can of Easy start and spray it all around the carb and associated pipe work, with the engine idling. If there's an airleak the revs will rise.
Word of WARNING, keep this stuff away from the exhaust manifold!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

doesnt appear to be air leak as we sprayed stuff all over pipes and doesnt seem to affect. its got dark now so we will give some more ideas a shoot tomorrow. we redone the valve clearances today and few inlets were slightly out and it didnt cut out when i drove it after that but its dark now so i came in and didnt get chance to try and get idle down but so far it hasnt cut out when lay off throttle.

just fort let u guys no after alot of different ideas and checks it was a dodgey amplifiier. it is weird because the car drove fine under boost and above 1500 and norm ally the amplifier cocks things up under load doesnt it. so if anyone else experiences what i did then check the amp. it would have saved us lots of hours .

By amplifier, do you mean the distributor electronic module or something else?
