The car is very nearly ready to go for it's MOT. But i can't get the damn indicators to work. Until a few days ago the hazzards worked, but no indicators, but now both have failed.

I've located the flasher unit in the dash (round metal thing) and it is producing a pulsed 12v feed.

I'm out of ideas of how to trace the fault on this. Does anyone have any tips?

Many thanks. :)

Not very sunny swanage

well, mine is about the same size as the other one, but a square/rectangle rather than round. should be about an inch or two from where you found the other one..... unless of course you havent got one, which could be why your indicators arent working *wink*

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Check out the hazard light switch in the dash. All the indicator wiring runs via this switch, if the contacts inside it are corroded or dirty nothing will work.

If you are CAREFUL you can get it apart by gently levering out the tabs on the side to release the rear half of it, and clean the contacts up with a bit of emery cloth.

I had this problem.

I think that the indicators are fed via a separate in-line fuse, whereas the hazard supply is off the fuse block. May be wrong but don't have the diagrams to hand.

Check your fuses.

That does ring a bell, there are a couple of inline fuses on the bulkhead in the engine bay, I can't remember what they feed exactly but I am sure they have something to do with the indicators.

Its not a relay, its a flasher unit, there is a difference.

Hi,
Is the old bi-metalic one a flasher unit, and the electronic type a flasher relay?

Corossion on the indicator bullit connectors, stopped my indicators at the front working though the flasher was going mad.

best way to check that you've got a closed circuit is to bridge both relay connections with wire, the lights should stay on.

Then try each relay in one of the flasher locations, leaving the other location bridged. :)
