Watched the later half of the show Rides (I think) where they were doing a HHR buildoff. Four teams were given a HHR to customize...yadda yadda yadda.... anywho's, one of the teams turbo'd one, but located the turbo just before the muffler. Reason stating that there was too much plastic under the hood that would melt from the heat of the turbo and it would help the turbo unit run cooler. Anyone thought or attempted to mount one on a mini like this? Would it actually be beneficial heat wise? Or with the little room, is it even possible to run another pipe back up to the engine bay?

I think someone on here has done it, a quick search should turn up his post (possibly in the 'Show us yours' section.

As far as Im aware, he got to the stage where he had fabricated and built it, but im not sire if it ever got running...?

Laugh all ya like, but they do actually work !! There are some 7sec 1/4 runners in the US with rear mount turbos.

Though with a small engine like a Mini, it would be at an even bigger disadvantage I think.

Here is a custom built rear mount on a Camaro.

I think this page was where someone had posted a pic at one time, down now.

TurboDave had posted:
"I've only seen these over here - I recall reading something that said Lag is hardly noticable.
This can only mean the turbo is too small for big power then!

The much lower temperature of the exhaust gasses at the tailpipe would also reduce the efficiency somewhat (lower temperature = less volume to spin the turbine wheel).

All in all - why bother?"

So would a bigger turbo than normal, push enough boost to keep the air warmer/hotter back to the engine?

why ??

Well, in the US, emissions laws are tight, so you cant mess with emission related items up front.

Weirdly, bolting a turbo after all that crap, almost bypasses that.

Its also cheaper and easier to install than a lot of front mount turbos. No new manifolds needed, no relocation of existing parts under the bonnet.

Obviously it has its own added difficulties, but overall cost is cheaper if you only want mild gains.

Hi!

I do have the car running. No dyno yet. Have reasonable mixture through the rev range now, after much fiddling. Turned out I had the air correctors in the Weber so small that it was actually going too rich at higher airflow. Which goes to show I don't need a restriction at the top of the venturi thanks to the adjustable air bleed which feeds emulsifying air into the fuel flow.
It's making about 9psi of boost, and nothing has gone bang yet.

I went out to go on a moutain tour for British cars on Saturday, and the throttle cable snapped on the way. Ugh. Three hours later got it patched back together and limped home, missing the tour.

Bananas soon.
