hi
i brought a 1988 mini turbo from a member on here last weekend.
it has been misfiring its tits off and majorly overfuelling.
i have replaced the leads as they were all split but i want to turn down the fuel mix before replacing the plugs because as it is it turns them black instantly.
so can anyone tell me how to adjust the fuel mix?
and reccomend some plugs?

cheers
Arun

looking from the front of the car, the carb will have all the fuel hoses on the left hand side of the carb, just bellow and back abit there is a hole, this wil have a screw in it for adjustment of the mixture. if the screw the screwdriver away from you you will lean it off, i recomend only doing this 1/4 turn at a time. but a rr is the best bet so not to melt stuff

i wouldnt fiddle unless you know what your doing... especially with a lot of boost.

you'll save more money on petrol than the RR costs you plus you wont be guessing *smiley*

im running it at 4psi until i fit a few more bits and bobs to make it reliable (copper head gasket, electric ignition etc)
and as far as i know its a standard metro turbo engine.

i have a rough idea what im doing- i set up my cough*moped*cough and minicross bike carb, but yes this is only temporary until i go to college. although i will call interpro and see how much they would charge to set it up, unless anyone can reccomend a better place in the area? (bristol)

i went out and had a look but i cant get to it with the limited tools i have at the moment, theres some mounting brackets in the way for the intercooler pipes, so im gonna bring some tools home tomorrow and do it then

You'll be lucky, the best I've found "locally" is Mech Repairs up in Cheltenham, they're not fans of SU carbs, but they do know their arse from there elbow.

weld a narrow band sensor in the downpipe and adjust till you get .8volts on idle,Have a drive around and make sure the voltage don't drop below .6

Jobs a goodun

Cost about a tenner

Is it defo overfuelling and not spark related ???
Sometimes a dodgy coil, or very poor spark can give similar symptoms to over fuelling.

I'd have thought that if the car was driving fine when the previous owner had it ( which I assume it was ??? ) and the engine sounds totally standard, is running minimal boost....What reason is there it should suddenly over fuel so bad ???

As for copper head gaskets.. I used one once. I'd never use one again. It lasted less than 20 miles.

Payen BK450 for me ( either that or a proper steel shim gasket )

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Hi,
The only things I could think of that would suddenly change the mixture would be a crushed air intake pipe from the air filter to the turbo, pressure regulator fault, blocked return line, or crap in the carb causing a float level problem.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

its already got sensor for voltmeter, i just need to get a dial/gauge. will do shortly

i think it is a spark problem rather than overfuelling causing the misfire, but it is overfuelling aswell, and has been since before i got it.

thanks for the info on copper gaskets too stevie, i really need to make it more reliable racking up about 100m per week

If it's over fuelling that badly doubt that it's just mal adjusted float valve would be a good place to start and check fuel pressure obstructions in the fuel return line etc. As Bat points out it might not be too much fuel but too little air, check intake hoses & filter too. Also oil in the carb dash pot, a fluttering dash pot that does a lovely impression of a misfire when you try to accelerate.

ok, thanks. ill try cleaning the carb tomorrow.
if that fails im considering ordering an electric ignition system. are these any good/compatible with turbo's?
its one that does away with points and the distributor in favour of a coil pack like in modern cars.
